Group of Three Folded Letters Written During the 1759 Québec Military Campaign, all three are addressed to Captain Boughey Skey, Commander of the Guard at the Bridges of the River St Charles, of the 43d Regiment of Foot (Kennedy's Grenadiers). The first letter is datelined "Camp Point Lévis 28th July 1759 / 10 at Night" and was written by Brigade Major John Spital (wounded on Sep 13, 1759), informing Skey that "...by orders of the General (Wolfe)... you march to the Encampment of the Grenadiers.. and put yourself under Major Morris's Orders... your men are only to carry their blankets with them...", etc. Written on the eve of the Battle of Beauport, also known as the Battle of Montmorency. The second letter is unaddressed, but starts off with "Dear Skey", datelined "Québec October the 21st 1759" written by Major of Brigade Richard Maitland (wounded Aug 8, 1759), informing Skey that the General (Wolfe) has intelligence suggesting that there are enemies "...on your side, and that they intend to surprise you... he desires that you be very alert...". The third letter is datelined "Québec 22 (October) 1759 / 6 oclock", written by Thomas Mills (wounded in Apr/May 1760) informing Skey that General Mills will be sending "...40 men out to the Country, they will come near your post at night...". This third letter has a half-remnant of a red wax seal bearing the arms and motto of General James Murray (who served immediately under General Wolfe and later became Governor of Québec). None of the letters have any postal indications and would have been carried "post haste" by army officers in this tumultuous time in Québec. The River St Charles (where Skey ad his men were posted) is the principal river within Québec City and played a prominent role during the Québec Campaign of 1759/1760. Captain Boughey Skey joined the Army in 1747 and became part of this Regiment in 1751. He would have certainly taken part in the famous Battle of the Plains of Abraham, which took place on Sep 13, 1759. A very important trio of letters in very fine condition. Group of Three "Québec Ship Letter" Postmarked Stampless Folded Letters, all three are incoming, with Kilmarnock (1806) to Montreal (oval ship letter Teyssier #SL5 plus Québec straightline on back Teyssier #L3), second has the same combination of postmarks, from AUG.16.1805, endorsed "Per Caledonia / Capt. D. Wilson". Both of these have a manuscript "10" (1d ship letter fee + 9d Québec to Montreal). Third letter is 1815 London to Montreal, with Teyssier #SL6 (first year of use) rated m/s "11½" (2½d ship gratuity + 9d Québec to Montreal). A scarce trio, fine to very fine. (Image)

Collection of Transatlantic Ship Letter Mail, 1820-1830, with 16 stampless folded letters, all mounted and described by the owner. We noted both incoming and outgoing mail, including a New York SHIP postmark (1820), a scarce "PAID 9&25" described as being the earliest BNA handstamp used during the ferriage period, an 1838 military letter written on JUL.4.1838 by 1st Lieut. S.P. Taylor (Royal Marines) from Raleigh (1829 type datestamp) to London, a few to and from Halifax and more. A great lot for the specialist with a few faults but still overall fine or better. 3d red Beaver Imperforate on Laid Paper on Folded Letter, mailed in Toronto on AUG.6.1851 to Proton, this two page folded letter is franked with a very fine 3d Beaver on laid paper. The stamp has three large margins plus one well clear at right, just tied by a target cancel. The Letter has a file fold close to the stamp but does not appear to affect it. A lovely early Canadian franked cover, very fine. (Image)
3d red Beaver Imperforate on Laid Paper on Cover, mailed from Toronto on SEP.4.1851 to Barrie (same day double broken circle receiver on back), franked with a very fine centred, large margined 3d Beaver single (slightly sulphuretted), cancelled by a target cancel. A very fine early small Lady's cover, accompanied by a 1990 Greene Foundation certificate stating that "the stamp has a small nick at upper left corner". (Image)
6d slate violet Consort Imperforate on Laid Paper on Folded Cross-Border Cover, mailed from Montreal on JUN.21.1853 to New York City, franked with a 6d slate violet on laid paper, with large to huge margins, just touching outer frameline at lower right, cancelled with a target in black. The cover (no content) also has a CANADA in arc and a PAID (tying the stamp), both in red. The name of the addressee was cut out, still a lovely stamp used on a very fine cross border cover. Accompanied by a 1993 Peter Holcombe (Switzerland) certificate incorrectly identifying the stamp as a #5, also with his signature on the cover. (Image)
6d Consort Imperforate on Laid Paper on Folded Cross-Border Letter, mailed from Montreal on JUL.10.1852 to Kennedy in New York City, franked with a 6d slate violet Consort, with sheet margin at left, two other large margins and cut into at bottom, cancelled by a target cancel in black. The folded letter (with letter inside) also has a CANADA in arc and a PAID, both postmarks in red. The stamp has a very light (almost imperceptible) horizontal crease from the cover, still a very fine cover. Accompanied by a 1984 B.P.A. certificate incorrectly identifying the stamp as a later printing. (Image)
3d red Beaver Imperforate on Folded Cover, mailed on JUL.26.1854 (Steamboat Letter / Québec broken circle in red) to Kingston (JUL.28 receiver in red) through Montreal (JUL.27 transit in black). The stamp is cut into at lower left but well tied by a neat target in black. The cover (no contents) is accompanied by a 2017 Greene Foundation certificate and also has a lovely watermark from "Royston & Brown / London", very fine. (Image)
3d red Beaver Imperforate on Folded Cover, mailed from Hamilton (OCT.20.1858 free strike) to St Catherines (next day receiver in red on back). The cover (no letter inside) is franked with a 3d red Beaver imperforate with three large to huge margins (showing next stamp at top) and well clear at bottom with a small nick, tied by a lovely strike (one of the nicest we've seen) of the Hamilton 16 in circular grid.
