image Advanced Collection of NEWCASTLE ON TYNE Squared Circle Postmarks, with a total of 160 covers and cards, with about half already sorted by Series (1st to 7th Series, other half are mostly identified in pencil but unsorted) . We note rates, usages, early and late dates, items to or from countries such as Germany, Canada, USA, Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Holland, Italy,Turkey, Norway, Belgium, Switzerland, etc. A great basis for a specialized study of this office, which used about 39 different hammers in the period between 1897 and 1926. Much better overall quality strikes than normal, with many different indicia, etc and a very nice group. The Handbook describes this town as having "the most unusual and unorthodox system of usage... distinctly different usage patterns to the normal E Types...". (Image)

image NORMANTON STATION an 80% despatch strike G / DE 31 / 00 on a 1d lilac QV cover to Huddersfield, with clear Carleton St / Castleford receiver dated F / DE 31 / 00 on back. This is the only known example of this hammer, as it was not even listed in the Handbook, nor in the 1st or 2nd or 4th Supplements. The 3rd Supplement lists this one as the only one known, and therefore it would get a rarity factor of 500. Cover has small faults, which do not detract from this great rarity. (Image)
