Henry Morgan Correspondence Pertaining to the Ottawa Valley, 1861-1893, mostly from 1891-1893, plus two dated 1932. Fascinating reading, with subjects such as the history of Le Breton, Lalièvre, Rideau Canal, Perth and various items pertaining to political or religious subjects, the first steamboat on the Ottawa River, Bytown and more. All 20 letters are accompanied by their original covers (3c Small Queens, free franked, etc) from a variety of nearby towns. One letter is headlined "Muskaig Lake, April 13th, 1893" and was mailed from Toronto. A few postmarks noted, but unchecked by us for signatures, etc. (Image)

Letter from Sir Sandford Fleming to Henry Morgan, in a small cover, franked with a pair of 1c Small Queens tied by Ottawa flag machine cancel dated MAR.27.1897. The letter, which is on Winterholme / Ottawa stationery and signed by Fleming, pertains to the 24 hour system, the Canadian Pacific and Intercolonial Railways. Fleming accompanied his letter by another (cannot ascertain signature on this one - see scans), which is also included. A very fine and interesting lot. Sir Sandford Fleming, a Scottish Canadian engineer promoted worldwide standard time zones and designed the first Province of Canada postage stamp, among many other accomplishments. (Image)

William Lyon Mackenzie King Correspondence, 1933 to 1948, mostly from King to his "friend" Wilna Agnès Moore of Saskatoon (born 1890 in Fort Qu'Appelle), and also contains some personal letters from Miss Moore's personal archives. The correspondence includes about 40 letters from King to her (1933-1948), mostly all of personal nature. The letters are mostly on Laurier House stationery, but also contains one on The Cloister House, Georgia illustrated stationery (1935), Hotel de la Paix in Geneva illustrated stationery (1936) and some on official Office of the Prime Minister letterhead. The contents of the letters are fascinating, as they occurred in the days before, during and after World War II. One 1947 letter from King tells her how he appreciated her gift of flowers and bottle of "Molyneux Eau de Cologne" but would have liked to return it to her as he knows how difficult it must have been for her to purchase it in Paris in these times. Another letter dated December 14, 1944 he writes "... the government has passed through a storm which threatened to destroy the party and the government and to leave its marks for generations to come in the country itself. Providence alone is to be thanked for having spared us all from such an appalling situation...". His letters are all neatly typed and hand signed by himself, and some have additional hand-written notes from him on them. Miss Moore was involved with Aboriginal and Metis affairs in Western Canada, and later worked at the Canadian Embassy in France, and there is correspondence from Yves Lamontagne there to the effect that she was discharged to be able to open a radio station in Dawson Creek, BC (CJDC) "in order to further develop cultural relationships between France and Canada", with various official letters describing the purchase of Marconi 1,000 watt equipment ($2,000), the purchase of ten acres of land for $500, various licenses, etc. Miss Moore's archives also contain several other letters addressed to her, mostly to do with the radio station or other matters, and includes also a 1957 photo-card hand-written and signed by John Diefenbaker, thanking her for her help in his election campaign. Other items include her Université de Paris student cards for 1931, Carte d'Identité Française dated 1931 with her photo and address at 67, rue du Théatre in Paris, as well as other photographs and documents. Lastly, the lot includes a nice collection of 19 different books by or about William Lyon Mackenzie King. A rare offering. (Image)

Correspondence Pertaining to the Surveying of the CPR Route North of Lake Superior, 1872 to 1876, being the material originally used by George MacManus to write a two-part article in the PHSC Journal (included in lot). Contains a total of 22 letters (most with their covers) mailed by William E. Morgan (member of the Fleming survey team) to his better known brother Henry J. Morgan in Ottawa. These detailed letters show the trials and tribulations associated with such a trip in Northern Ontario in those days. There are way too many interesting quotes we could make here but recommend viewing the lot in person to better appreciate. There are many references to places he went through (and wrote from) such as "Pie Post Camp", "Camp 8", "The Pie", "Prince Ruperts Land", "Camp 35", "Red Rock", Lac des Milles Lacs", "Camp 76", "Fort Francis" and many more. From the point of postal history, this is also an interesting lot, for the scarce early (for this area) broken circles it contains, mostly on 3c Small Queen covers, but also some free-franked, with rate handstamps. Noted Fort William, Red Rock, Thunder Bay, one cover mailed "via Duluth" in 1874, Michipocoten River CW, etc. Faults, still a fascinating read and historically important. (Image)

Nice Group of 88 Small Queen Covers, twelve are #8 sized and franked with a 1c and a 2c (1879 to 1890s), ten are #10 sized covers franked with a single 1c, and some of these are endorsed Per Book Post or Parcel Post (note one with lovely illustrated Wellington Insurance corner card and even more lovely fully illustrated insurance policy inside). Two #8 sized covers are franked with a single 2c, and the rest are franked with a single 3c, with better such as early usages (JUL.11.1870, AUG.6.1870, SEP.22.1870, DEC 16.1870, SEP 23.1871, SEP.25.1871, and so on) with early shades and some postmark interest, with broken circles, duplex, some House of Assembly receivers in red, a nice red OMEMEE double broken circle, and more. Also note a few illustrated advertising but those tend to be fronts only. All are sleeved and there are several faults, but overall mostly fine or better. Ex. Ron Saint. (Image)

Lovely Collection of 15 Advertising Jubilee Covers, all fifteen are dated in 1897 and show a good variety of different advertising, some in colour, many illustrated. Frankings range from mostly 3c Jubilees, 1c + 2c Jubilee combo, 1c Jubilee drop letter rate, 1c Jubilee + 1c Numeral Toronto to Flesherton (with letter inside), a lovely wrapper with two 1c Jubilees, and a cover franked with 2c Jubilee + 2c SQ + 2c Leaf. We note a good variety of postmarks as well, including flag machines, nice Peter Street duplex, orbs, a nice RPO, York Street squared circle, etc. A very nice and clean lot, with most items in very fine condition. Accumulation of Mostly Northern Ontario Small Queen Covers, with about 130 in all, mostly 3c frankings, almost all with business corner cards, strong in Northern Ontario towns, noted lumbering, surveyors, agents, etc. Also noted postmark interest such as squared circles, RPO and fancy cancels. Overall fine, but with creases (all have been folded in half) or opening faults, etc.
