"Fernandina Fla Dec 20 1861," cds on envelope addressed to Aberdeen, Mississippi, additional "Paid 5" straight-line handstamp (CSA Handbook Type B), "Due 5" handstamp struck in Memphis en route, large ms "X" applied in Aberdeen as with other covers from the Ward correspondence (see Confederate Philatelist No 331, pg 199-204), cover minor edge wrinkles, bold well struck cancels and markings on a Very Fine cover, the Fernandina postmaster in this case did not recognize that the routing via Memphis (instead of Mobile due to the Gulf blockade) required a 10c over-500 miles rate, this is one of only two recorded examples of this underpaid use, accompanied by another incoming cover to Aberdeen from the same Ward correspondence with a large ms "X" applied by the Aberdeen postmaster; illustrated in Confederate Philatelist Vol 47 No 6 pg 200; ex Gibson, Myerson (Image)

"Fernandina Fla Jan 29 1862," cds on envelope addressed to Alexander Stevens in Richmond (CSA Vice President), nice strike of "Paid 10" straight-line (CSA Handbook Type C), envelope opened and reduced at top, 20mm edge break at left, still Very Fine and the latest of the three known examples of the Type C markingrnInteresting message on back: "Col. Edw. Hopkins, 4th Regt. Fla. Vols...on 3rd day of Sept 1861 I appointed Edward Badger Esqr, my Adgt. ever since which time he has served without receiving either his commission or a cent of his pay. See that his commission is made out and sent to him". rnColonel Hopkins was a wealthy Florida planter and served as a State Senator but lost race for Governor in 1860. He commanded the garrison at Apalachicola but was criticized for insobriety, bad military judgement and failure to keep discipline and was defeated for re-election in May of 1862. He served as mayor of Jacksonville from 1868 to 1870. (Image)

Aug. 29." blue occupation double-circle datestamp with a matching target and oval-framed "Free" on envelope addressed to Baltimore, envelope small tears at top, both covers Very Fine appearance and scarce occupation mailrnFernandina, on Amelia Island, was just the third town in Florida to have a post office and is the only municipality in America to have flown eight different national flags. It was occupied on March 4, 1862, but an occupation post office was not established until April 27, 1863 and it was months later that the office received its own cancelling device. (Image)

"Fort Taylor Feb 11," (1864) ms postmark and "paid 10" on turned adversity cover addressed to "Camp Finigan (sic) in car (sic) of Captain E Hope," turned and reused unfranked and with Florida soldier endorsement addressed to St. Pauls, North Carolina with "Lake City Fla Mar 23" cds and "Due 10" handstamp (CSA Handbook Type F), cover open each side and just barely attached at a single corner, Fine soldier's use and most likely carried by a soldier during the Battle of Olustee; one of only two covers postmarked at Fort Taylor during the Confederate States period; illustrated in Briggs pg 82 and Confederate Philatelist Vol 33, No 6, pg, 212; ex-BoggrnConfederate military engineer Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard oversaw Camp Finegan's construction in 1862. The camp was used as the base of operations for the Confederacy in northeast Florida. It was was named for General Joseph Finegan, who would go on to lead a Confederate force to victory at the Battle of Olustee (February 20, 1864; the only major battle of the war fought in Florida). "Homosassa Jan 29th 1864," ms postmark on envelope addressed to "Hon C C Clay of Ala./ for Mrs Clay/ Richmond Va," franked with uncancelled 1862-63 10c Blue Die B (12) with wide irregular margins, Very Fine and rare being the only Confederate States franked cover posted from this town; illustrated in Briggs pg 93. rnMost likely written by David Yulee whose sugar plantation, Margarita, was in Homosassa. It was destroyed by Union soldiers in July of 1864. rnClement Claiborne Clay (1816-82), also known as CC Clay, Jr., was a US Senator (Democrat) from Alabama from 1853 to 1861, and a Confederate States Senator from Alabama from 1862 to 1864. Clay was imprisoned by the US government at Fort Monroe from 1865 to 1866 under impression that he was involved in the plot to assassinate President Abraham Lincoln. His portrait appeared on the Confederate $1 note (4th issue and later).rnMrs. Clay (Virginia Clay-Clopton; 1825-1915) was a political hostess and activist in Alabama and Washington, DC and was imprisoned with her husband at Fort Monroe on suspicion of being involved in the Lincoln assassination.
