MR1E-TA, 1883 1c+1c Mercer paid reply card essay, first design with "U.S. Postage" in indicia, framelines at left and right sides, card with two 1883 2c Red brown (210) singles, top tied by "Cincinnati O., Jul 14 '86" duplex, addressed to "Mann & Kendig, Altoona, Pa.," returned with second stamp tied by "Altoona Pa., Jul 21, 1886" duplex and addressed to "R.W. Mercer, Cincinnati, O.," additional July 23 Cincinnati receiver, light overall toning but still Very Fine, an attractive paid reply card essay sent through the mails, ex-Horton (Scott UY1E; USPCC MR1E-TA, $200 for mint)rnMann & Kendig were well-known early stamp dealers based out of Altoona, Pennsylvania, who published the Keystone Stamp and Coin Gazette, later the Philatelic Gazette. Mercer's message to Mann & Kendig on the reverse of this card reads, "How much will you pay for the loan of this card with an article in regard to the merits of this duplex post card. Reply on this card. Resp. R.W. Mercer, July 1886." Mann & Kendig's response reads, "We really cannot see that it would be an advantage to use to pay for the prestige of advertising this card. The P.O. Dept. will probably issue one before long as a bill has been introduced with that view. Very much yours, M&K". Thus the card provides us with a fascinating glimpse into Mercer's marketing efforts amongst the philatelic community for the acceptance of his paid reply card essay. (Image)

PT-4, 1c Brown on light buff, Brooks Postal Tag Essay Fourth Design, on 148x74mm dull v. pale o-yellow card folded at right, all four corners beveled, so that, on folding, the bevels coincide, a 3½mm hole at the left on the front half coincides with a similar hole in the rear card, no eyelet or reinforcing fiber around hole on either half, the printing on the face half of this variety is very similar to that shown on PT-2 with exception there has been an additional line of type added across the bottom portion of the card reading "Detach Postal Tag Card and Write Your Order Thereon" in block letters, Very Fine (USPCC PT-4, $750) (Image)
