Feb 11, 1893" arrival duplex, Very Fine (Peters-Uota No. JSS-HS-1)rnJohn Samuel Smithies was Deputy Collector of Customs for Mahukona, also serving as Postmaster of Mahukona (1887-1902) until his death. He was born in 1832 in Newfoundland and in 1850 came to Honolulu for J.T. Waterhouse. In 1889, he was appointed Collector of Customs for Muhukona. (Image)

213 var, 1907 1c Yellow green, Red "O.B." overprint, single with natural straight edge at right, light "Victoria" (Hong Kong) postmark, nearly-invisible thin spot at center, still Very Fine and attractive, only one other recorded for this issue (mint) with lower elevation overprint, very likely the only used example of this extremely rare overprint, 2017 Philatelic Foundation certificaternIn May 1907 the director of the Philippines Constabulatory, Brig. General Harry Bandholtz, requested permission from the Bureau of Posts to use printed "O.B." overprints on 1899-1904 stamps in order to control the expenses of his department. The Bandholtz "O.B." letters were printed on the stamp, and so differ from other overprints that were handstamped or written in manuscript. They are unlisted in Scott. (Image)
