Framed "F." postmark of El Banco, on folded cover addressed to General Mosquera at Bogotá, dated in pencil April 4 1839, but not contemporarily written with the purpose of indicating the date after extracting the contents ; an extremely rare postmark, of Spanish origin, with only three items recorded. #2, #6, 1859, 5c Blue, stone A, and 20c Blue, stone B, position 40, the former slightly cut into with very good margins on other three sides, the higher denomination being well margined, on envelope endorsed “Consulate of the United States/Cartagena-New Granada" addressed to Mompós, both stamps being tied by "Cartagena/Franca" oval handstamp, "Albert Mathieu/Carthagena N.G." forwarding agent’s cachet at bottom left, being the company that usually dispatched the mail from the U.S. Consulate and consigned this cover to the Cartagena national postal administration for the journey covered by the post, the 25 c. postage being paid to cover the triple weight rate up to 20 grams of this large envelope for a distance between 150 and 450 km; small portion of paper loss in upper left corner, not affecting the appearance of this stunning item; a rarity bearing two different denominations in same color, with only six such combination frankings so far recorded, further enhanced by being one of only six postal history examples in the first issue with involvement of a forwarding agent in its carriage; 2013 Moorhouse and 2018 Martínez certificates; ex-Santa María and Hubbard.(Image)

Gebauer #16, 1920 30c on 10c Green, featuring a barely visible impression of the surcharge which may have faded with time, on cover front addressed to Barranquilla, tied by “Cía de Navegación/Aérea/Agencia Barranquilla” ribbon handstamp in purple, handstamped with “22 FEB 1920” date adjacent, and bearing manuscript inscription in Spanish at left: “Souvenir of the first airmail flight. Cartagena, February 21, 1920” and signature by Mr. Soto; one of just three covers recorded exhibiting the 30 centavos surcharge on this stamp;ex-Johnson.The cover, which is not flown, was not franked with the required national postage, and the C.C.N.A. adhesive is tied by a Barranquilla handstamp which was not applied on any of the regularly flown covers. Mr. J. Soto very probably made an agreement with the C.C.N.A. and prepared a very small quantity of covers to be given to friends, although these were dated as from the First Flight of February 22. Nevertheless, one may hypothesize, and it is also believed by few collectors, that these souvenir covers were flown on the first stage (Cartagena-Barranquilla) of the flight by the “Medellín” of 30 November 1920 (the plane suffered a breakdown at El Banco), since the surcharge of 30 centavos corresponded to the C.C.N.A. Nevertheless, this hypothesis can not be demonstrated and, on the other hand, the national postage is missing.(Image)
