image 1861 1c indigo, Premiere Gravure (August Issue) unused without gum, usual centering, deep and rich color, rounded upper left and lower right corners, two tiny tears at right, fine appearance, with 1951 (clear) and 2019 Philatelic Foundation Certificates, ex-Huber. Siegel Census records 25 copies (including one in the Miller Collection), approximately half with faults, this copy recorded as number 55-UN-16 (currently listed in Scott catalogue as 63-E11e, catalogued as unused without gum). This example has not been seen since 1951 (at that time, the Premiere Gravure stamps were listed as Scott 55-62, with an editor's note stating "It is doubtful that Nos. 55, 56, 57, 59, 61 and 62 were regularly issued." Beginning with the 1991 U.S. Specialized Catalog, the Premiere Gravure issues, including Scott 58, were moved to the Special Printings section of the catalog. A footnote stated that "No. 62B unused cannot be distinguished from No. 58, which does not exist used." An Essays section was added to the 1992 Scott U.S. Specialized catalog and the Premiere Gravure issues were renumbered and listed in the Essays section or Trial Color Proofs section of the catalog. In the 2003 U.S. Specialized catalog, Scott recognized that the former 58 and the current 62B actually were the same stamp, and 58 was deleted from the listings. In the 2009 Scott U.S. Specialized catalog, the Premiere Gravure issues were grouped together in a special section titled "1861 First Design Essays and Trial Color Proofs." The Premiere Gravure issues also are listed in the Essays and the Trial Color, Die and Plate Proofs sections. Their current numbers, with original numbers in parentheses are: Scott 63-E11e (55), 65-E15h (56), 67-E9e (57), 69-E6e (59), 70TC6 (60), 71TC6 (61), and 72-E7h (62), cat. $50000 (Cat No. 55) (Image)

image 1867 5c brown, A.Grill Essay (covering the entire stamp), original gum, pulled perforation at lower right, fine appearance, with 1969 (as Scott No.80 unused with original gum) and 2019 Philatelic Foundation Certificates, ex-Meilstrup (1973 sale, sold as a stamp). There are four known unused "essays", all originating from a block of four from the Earl of Crawford's collection (presumably this is the lower right stamp). There are also only four known used examples, which are listed in the Scott catalogue as number 80 (with a catalogue value of $260,000, likely to rise after a recent hammer of $340,000). One of only four unused copies, this is quite possibly the finest, as it has original gum and only a minor flaw. An unused without gum copy with small faults brought $22,000 in the 2015 Siegel Rarities Sale (two of the four unused 5c A Grill stamps from the Earl of Crawford block, including this one, were previously certified as genuine Scott 80's by The Philatelic Foundation, which currently describes them as essays) (Cat No. 80E) (Image)

There are only 8 known copies of this stamp (including one in the New York Public Library Collection), all used, poorly centered, and most contain some degree of faults. image 1867 3c rose, B. Grill, black grid cancel, accompanied by the original cover from Mason, Texas to Darmstadt, Germany (10c paid the rate to Hamburg, with additional 2c needed to pay for the transmission from Hamburg to Darmstadt), which contained a row of four of the 3c "B" Grill singles (the only four known copies). The cover is illustrated and extensively described in the 1966 "The United States Postage Stamps of the 19th Century" by Lester Brookman. The example offered here is centered to upper left (as all four copies are), has a natural straight edge at right, light diagonal crease, fine, with a photograph of the 1969 PFC for the original cover showing the four stamps (removed and hinged back) and 2019 PFC for this single copy. The emergence of this particular stamp along with the actual cover from which it originated is a major philatelic revelation, as both have not been seen in over 50 years. Recent realizations of singles include $575,000 (plus buyer's premium) in a 2015 Siegel Rarities sale and $900,000 (plus buyer's premium) in the Perry Hansen sale (Siegel Auctions, 2008) on which the current Scott catalogue value is based. This 3 Cent B Grill is one of the four discovered together on a cover to Germany. It is one of the rarest stamps in the world and a key to a complete collection of the United States stamps, cat. $900000 (Cat No. 82) (Image)

image 1867 15c black, Z.Grill, geometric cancel, centered to right, completely sound, one of only two known copies, with 1962 and 2019 Philatelic Foundation Certificates, ex-Eugene Costales. A tremendous United States and World Class rarity, ex-Schilling Collection, last offered in a 1975 Siegel Rarities sale (catalogued in the grade of extremely fine at $2,000,000 and $800,000 as VG-50 in the U.S. Specialized by Grade). This stamp is definitely a key to forming a complete U.S. stamp collection, equal in rarity to the famous Z.Grill 1c (In Scott catalogue of U. S. Stamps, the 15c Z.Grill is listed as 85F: it is one of the very few issues that does not bear a unique number but must share its numeral (85) with other stamps of different denominations. This anomaly arose because Scott created its system long before the Z pattern gained general recognition as a separate variety of Grill (which did not occur until the 1910s). Accordingly, Scott assigned capital letters to the Z.Grill denominations and inserted them into the catalogue after No.85 (the 3c D.Grill). The 1c Z.Grill appeared as 85A and the 2c through 15c Z.Grills were designated 85B through 85F. This expedient enabled Scott to retain the existing numbers for all subsequent stamps, beginning with the E.Grill issues (86-91) (Cat No. 85F) (Image)

image 1882 5c gray brown, without gum as issued, deep rich color and proof-like impression, perfectly centered with wide margins, with 1957 and 2019 Philatelic Foundation Certificates, the latter graded "XF-S95". Only 18 examples have been recorded (Siegel Census 205C-UNC-17), this certainly ranking among the finest, if not the finest. This elusive Special Printing was the subject of an informative article by William E. Mooz in The Chronicle, February 1992. His research provides strong evidence that the stamps recognized as Scott 205C are a small part of the 2,463 sold as Special Printings through the Third Assistant Postmaster General's office, and that regular issues were used to fill the backlog of orders for the 5c Garfield, ex-Caspary (as block of four, this is a bottom right example) (SMQ $120,000) (Scott catalogue value for Graded XF-SUP95) cat. $100000 (Cat No. 205C) (Image)

image 1893 4c blue, error of color, h.r., centered to left, nice blue color, tiny natural inclusion, fine example of this rarity, with 1953 and 2019 Philatelic Foundation Certificates (the 4c Columbian color error was caused by the use of a wrong batch of ink, and spectrographic analysis has shown that the blue inks of the 4c error and 1c Columbian have the same components. Stamps from at least two panes reached collectors, and it is likely that many of the stamps have been lost to philately) cat. $17500 (Cat No. 233a) (Image)

Some examples, both with and without the overprint, were given away by Third Asst. Postmaster General Edwin C. Madden. When postal authorities learned of the practice, they destroyed 194 copies and put one pane of 100 into the official archives. At a later date, 97 of these were traded for rarities missing from the archives. Scott notes that "Almost all unused examples of No. 296a have partial or disturbed gum. image 1908 4c brown, Imperforate, Schermack Type II, horizontal pair, margins clear all around, original gum, h.r., left stamp with tiny marginal nick, right stamp with part paste-up on back, completely sound, with 1952 and 2019 Philatelic Foundation Certificates. Only 21 unused stamps are recorded, including four pairs and two guide line pairs, this one listed in the Siegel Census 314A-OG-PR3. A major 20th Century United States Rarity (with the rising popularity of vending and affixing machines, the Bureau of Engraving and Printing received numerous requests from manufacturers for supplies of imperforate stamps, which could then be privately perforated to conform to each firm's machine. In May 1908, a supply of 25 sheets (400 stamps per sheet) of the 4c 1902 Issue, without perforations, was delivered to the Schermack Mailing Machine Co. in Detroit. The entire supply was cut into coils with Schermack Type III perforations, designed for the firm's patented affixing machine and delivered to the Winfield Printing Co. for use on mass mailings of advertising material. Approximately 6,000 were used on a mailing for Hamilton Carhartt Manufacturer, and almost all of the 4,000 balance were used on a mailing for Burroughs Adding Machine Co.) cat. $250000 (Cat No. 314A) (Image)

The 3c Orangeburg coil was made by the Post Office Department in 1911, specifically for use by the Bell Pharmaceutical Company. The stamps were used to send product samples to physicians and were put through the first-class cancelling machine at Orangeburg, New York. Due to the coil stamps' use on mass mailings, many of the surviving copies are faulty to some extent. The most common defects are corner creases or tears. image 1923 1c green, Rotary, perf. 11, unused without gum, well centered for this difficult issue with perfs clear (often found with perfs in), small paper flaw and a tiny natural inclusion at bottom, fine, with 1961 and 2019 Philatelic Foundation Certificates. One of the rarest 20th Century United States stamps in unused condition (594 is waste from a horizontal rotary printing used to make coils. At the beginning or end of a coil-stamp print run from the 170-subject rotary plates, some leading or trailing paper was produced that was too short for rolling into 500-stamp rolls. In 1919 the Bureau devised a plan to salvage this waste by perforating and cutting the sheets into panes. They were put through the 11-gauge flat-plate perforator in use at the time, giving the sheets full perforations on all sides. The existence of Scott 594 was not reported until four months after the final sheets were delivered, and the 1c Rotary perf. 11 was soon recognized as one of the rarest United States stamps. Siegel Census of unused examples of Scott 594 records only 18 (!) copies. Of these only 11 have any gum, and three of those have perforated initials of Crowell Publishing Co. of Springfield, Ohio, which some collectors regard as equivalent to a cancel. The example offered here is Census No. 594-OG-05 (Scott Catalogue notes "both unused and used are valued with perforations just touching frameline on one side") (catalogued as unused without gum) cat. $35000 (Cat No. 594) (Image)

Of the 15 known examples (all used), only five have machine cancels (the other ten have "Kansas City, MO" precancels) and only two are completely sound (the other two have varying degrees of faults, far more significant than the "short perf" mentioned here). image 1923 2c black, Rotary perf. 11, machine cancel, fine, completely sound, with 1958 and 2019 Philatelic Foundation Certificates. Warren G. Harding, the 29th President, died in San Francisco on August 2, 1923 and a Harding memorial stamp, printed in black was rushed into production. The first flat plate printing (Scott 610) was issued on September 1, 1923 in his home town of Marion, Ohio, followed less than two weeks later by the normal perf. 10 rotary press printing (Scott 612) on September 12. The 2c Harding Rotary perf. 11 stamp was discovered in 1938 by Leslie Lewis of the New York firm, Stanley Gibbons Inc. Gary Griffith presents his hypothesis in United States Stamps 1922-26, that rotary-printed sheets of 400 were first reduced to panes of 100 and then fed through the 11-gauge perforating machine normally used for flat plate sheets, cat. $40000 (Cat No. 613) (Image)

The Inverted Jenny - position 27

image 1918 24c carmine rose and blue, center inverted, position 27, attractively centered, deep rich colors, full original gum, minor hinge remnant, handstamped "Sanabria N.Y.", v.f. and desirable sound copy. The Inverted Jenny is one of the most recognized and desired rarities in all of philately. Its legendary status began the moment the stamp was issued in May, 1918, when William T. Robey purchased an entire error sheet of 100 at the New York Avenue Post Office window in Washington D.C., one day after the stamp was issued on May 14th. Within one week Robey sold the sheet for $15,000.00 to the well-known Philadelphia stamp dealer Eugene Klein (an impressive return on his initial $24.00 investment). Shortly thereafter Mr. Klein sold the sheet to the renowned, yet eccentric collector, Col. Edward H.R. Green for $20,000.00. Col. Green asked Klein to break up the sheet for him into singles and blocks, then instructed him to sell all but the few key position blocks. The copy offered here was last sold in a Robert A. Siegel auction in 1990 where it brought $115,000 plus buyer's premium. Previous owners include William T Robey, Eugene Klein, Colonel Edward H.R.Green, Carlton Smith, Caroline P Cromwell and Irwin Weinberg. Despite the rarity and great value of Inverted Jenny stamps, many of the original 100 have been poorly treated by its owners over the years. Colonel Green himself allowed moisture to affect some of the stamps he retained. Eight straight edge copies were found in Colonel Green's estate, stuck together in an envelope (they had to be soaked and lost their gum). Other examples have become somewhat toned due to climate and poor care. Some copies were badly hinged and hinge removal resulted in thin spots and creases, one was even taped to an exhibit page. A famous vacuum cleaner story recounted how a stamp was almost lost. A wonderful opportunity to obtain a sound and beautiful Inverted Jenny, not seen on the market since 1990, with 2019 Philatelic Foundation certificate numbered "558675", cat. $450000 (Cat No. C3a) (Image)

A rare Postage Due Special Printing. William E. Mooz, in an article on the 1c appearing in Chronicle No. 170, May 1996, offers evidence to support his theory that the actual number of true Special Printings sold was significantly lower than the reported figures.
