image 1845 Folded Letter Rioverde to Esmereldas (Ecuador) with Negative "Sailing Ship" handstamp, datelined "17 de Julio en 1845", Very Fine and choice example of this incredibly rare marking with the comment "the only one I have ever seen" from an advanced collector of ship markings; 2012 Brian Moorhouse certificate stating "...almost certainly of private origin. The cover was probabaly carried outside the postal system and went by sea for the short (circa 40km) journey between the two coastal locations." (Image)

image 1855 Cover Barbados to Baltimore, folded letter dateline "Barbados 6th Dec 1855" and including another 2-page letter (in a different hand from Barbados dated Nov 27 1855), ms notation "p Thos Trowbridge via Trinidad", fantastic strikes of the New Haven Con Dec 31 1865 transit cds, "5" (3c domestic postage to Baltimore plus 2c ship fee) and ornamental "Ship" maritime handstamp, some aging along a horiz file fold but still Very Fine and eye-catching. rnThe addressee, Barreda & Brother of Baltimore, was a firm that acted as agents of the Government of Peru for the shipment of guano from the Chincha Islands (three small islands 13 miles off the SW coast of Peru) to the United States in the 1850s, primarily as a source of fertilizer for the tobacco industry in Virginia. rnThe letter refers to business matters and mentions "Since our last there have been several arrivals of slaves but chiefly of inferior quality. image "Correos de la Chimba/ Bolivia", excellent strike of the negative oval handstamp with outline of a steamship design, additional "Franca" handstamp on envelope addressed to Valparaiso Chile (22 Set 77 arrival backstamp), envelope some light edge wrinkling and a tiny edge break at top, Very Fine and choice; letters carried by ship from the Bolivian port of Chimba to overseas destinations were struck with the oval handstamp. This marking was employed by the postmaster at Chimba in conjunction with the "Franca" handstamp to indicate postage was paid. (Image)
