See that his commission is made out and sent to him". rnColonel Hopkins was a wealthy Florida planter and served as a State Senator but lost race for Governor in 1860. He commanded the garrison at Apalachicola but was criticized for insobriety, bad military judgement and failure to keep discipline and was defeated for re-election in May of 1862. The camp was used as the base of operations for the Confederacy in northeast Florida. It was was named for General Joseph Finegan, who would go on to lead a Confederate force to victory at the Battle of Olustee (February 20, 1864; the only major battle of the war fought in Florida). It was destroyed by Union soldiers in July of 1864. rnClement Claiborne Clay (1816-82), also known as CC Clay, Jr., was a US Senator (Democrat) from Alabama from 1853 to 1861, and a Confederate States Senator from Alabama from 1862 to 1864. Clay was imprisoned by the US government at Fort Monroe from 1865 to 1866 under impression that he was involved in the plot to assassinate President Abraham Lincoln. His portrait appeared on the Confederate $1 note (4th issue and later).rnMrs. Clay (Virginia Clay-Clopton; 1825-1915) was a political hostess and activist in Alabama and Washington, DC and was imprisoned with her husband at Fort Monroe on suspicion of being involved in the Lincoln assassination. "Madison Fla Augt 3," manuscript cancel plus ms "Paid 10" on envelope addressed to "Gen H Cobb/ Quincy Fla," some mathematical doodling but still Very FinernHowell Cobb (1815-68) was a southern Democrat and served five terms in the US House of Representatives, being the Speaker of the House from 1849 to 1851. He also served as the 40th Governor of Georgia (1851-53) and as a Secretary of the Treasury under President Buchanan (1857-60). He is probably best known as one of the founders of the Confederacy, having served as the President of the Provisional Congress of the Confederate States.In October 1862, Cobb was detached from the Army of Northern Virginia and sent to the District of Middle Florida. He was promoted to Major General Sept 9, 1863, and placed in command of the District of Georgia and Florida. (Image)

"Patrick Fla Mar 7 63," manuscript postmark ("Feb 7" is crossed out) on unrated envelope (would have required 10c to be pre-paid) addressed to David Yulee in Gainesville, Florida, bit of edge wear including a small edge break at bottom, portion of backflap missing and with some aging, appears to have been a turned cover having been used on incoming mail to Patrick and with the stamps removed, Very Fine; the only Confederate period cover known originating in Patrick; illustrated in Briggs pg 193 and Florida Postal History Society JournalVol 13, No 3, pg 8 rnDavid Yulee (1810-86) was an American politician and attorney. Born in St. Thomas, then under British control, he was of Sephardi Jewish ancestry. The family moved to Florida when he was a child, and he grew up there on their extensive lands, later serving as Florida's territorial delegate to Congress. Yulee was the first person of Jewish ancestry to be elected and serve as a United States Senator. He founded the Florida Railroad Company and served as president of several other companies, earning the nickname of "Father of Florida Railroads." He was in favor of slavery and the secession of Florida. After the Civil War, he was imprisoned at Fort Pulaski for nine months for having aided the escape of Confederate President Jefferson Davis. After being pardoned by President Andrew Johnson, he returned to his Florida railroad interests and other business ventures. (Image)
