image (Express Mail Albany to Buffalo) U.S. Express Mail, Jul 4. Choice strike of red route agent cds and matching "Free" rating on folded letter datelined "Buffalo July 3d 1844" to Bern, N.Y., Very Fine and choice.

The Express Mail service from Albany to Buffalo encompassed a total of 8 different railroad route contracts. This letter was carrier east over seven of the railroads. In July 1842 the Expressman, William F. Harnden was contracted to supervise the carriage of the mails on the full route. He employed two agents to accompany the car the full distance.

If from New York the mail car left Hunters Point, Brooklyn at 8.00 a.m. to arrive at Greenport at 1.15 p.m. The 94 mile journey being run at an average speed of 18 mph.

image (Montreal & Champlain Railroad) Montreal & Champ. R.R., Apr. 12, 1860., Rouse's Point. Perfect strike of oval railroad marking on orange cover to Montreal, manuscript notation "Important", Extremely Fine, Rarity VI.

Remele has never seen this marking on a letter, however in addition to this cover, we are aware of one other cover with this marking which is franked with 1857 3¢ issue. The same marking is often seen cancelling revenue stamps from this border depot.

This cover was sold by Robert A. Siegel in 1953 as part of the famous BURGER & CO. STOCK, PART III (Sale 164, Lot 18).
