Three-page May 27, 1856 letter providing first-hand account of a railroad accident reading in part "…the other day I stood looking at the express train door and see it go through…it went dreadful fast and it just got below the depo it run off the track and went down the bank and smashed the engine all to atoms and it hurt the passengers very much so that some of them fainted away there is one old lady here to the village that they don't know whether she will recover or not she came from Philadelphia there was not but four but that got hurt to cars…it was on the account of the switch being turned wrong…", Very Fine.

This rare pamphlet is one of several promotions describing-- as of different dates-- the status of the transcontinental railroad's construction, and the Union Pacific's progress. The Map and accompanying text detail the responsibilities of the Union Pacific and Central Pacific Railroads in completing the transcontinental railroad, with branches into Washington and Montana. The pamphlet details the agricultural and mineral resources of the land which the Road will open to settlement; the resources available to the Union Pacific [including government funding], the financial status of the Road, and the availability of mortgage bonds [which the rear wrapper also advertises].
