1844 AU or very nearly so. Maybe a couple blemishes here and there, but overall a sound high-grade no-motto Seated Half. (Image)

1861-O AU. There are light obv hairlines under the lovely original grey color of this coin, but the rev is perfectly original, and it is very appealing to the eye. The 1861-O half dollar has always been of historical significance because of events occurring at the start of the Civil War. Of the entire mintage of 2,532,633 pieces, we know that 330,000 were minted while the New Orleans mint was still under Union control. But the State of Louisiana took over the mint for two months starting Feb.1st 1861. During that time, an additional 1,020,000 coins were struck. The final production of 1,212,000 occurred after Mar. 25th 1861, the date that the CSA assumed control of the N.O. mint. Some of the specimens of this last group show diagnostic signs, one of which is very weak drapery from Liberty's elbow. This coin shows that weakness; therefore, the opinion of this cataloger is that this coin is among the CSA issues. (Image)
