1829 Stampless entire 4-sided letter, on W PICKERING & SONS 1821 paper. No postal markings, from DPMG, T A STAYNER, dated Genl Post Office, Quebec, 27Jany 1829 to J HOWARD, PMr, York. Private letter in two parts. First part thanks Howard for his information given under examination to a Committee of the House comments on Lt Governor’s recommendation to improve the roads. Second part goes through suggestions relating to Howard’s evidence. Howard should write to Mr John Crooks “to get you a more decent office stamp.... get one with the name of yr. Office in a circle.... moveable type...”. Howard corrected re printed papers “open at the ends generally go free” – wrong! Also re smaller offices advertising letters not called for. This info helped Stayner in his 1829 PO reforms, incl new date stamps! WITH FULL TRANSCRIPT. Interesting details in letter likely sent under cover of another. File folds, Ex-Stulberg.
