VERY FINE APPEARANCE. THE CONDITION OF THIS STAMP IS FAR SUPERIOR TO MANY OF THE 32 RECORDED OFF-COVER EXAMPLES OF THE BRATTLEBORO PROVISIONAL. AN OUTSTANDING RARITY FROM THE ORIGINAL CHUBBUCK SHEET.

This stamp comes from the sheet retained by the printer, Thomas Chubbuck, who sold three stamps to collectors before selling the remaining block of seven to L. H. Bragg in September 1870. Bragg, in turn, sold the block to John W. Scott. The stamps from the Chubbuck block were eventually cut apart and sold to different collectors. In the 1920's Raymond W. Lapham, with the professional help of Warren H. Colson, reconstructed the Brattleboro plate positions, including some stamps from the Chubbuck sheet.

VERY FINE. A RARE USE OF THE 5-CENT NEW YORK POSTMASTER'S PROVISIONAL WITH "RHM" INITIALS ON COVER FROM NEW YORK -- ESPECIALLY DESIRABLE TIED BY THE RED "PAID" HANDSTAMP.

The "RHM" initialed stamp is extremely rare on cover. Because of the New Hamburgh find, it is as rare used from New York City as used to New York City. Philip T. Wall recorded only six "RHM" covers used from New York in his Chronicle series, though he was not aware of this cover. Two of the covers recorded by Wall are addressed to the same recipient as this cover. They are dated March 13 (ex Caspary and Weill) and March 19 (ex Col. Green and Weill).
