ONE PENNY: 1d bright yellow-green SG 99 regular compound perf 11½-12½x10 plus De La Rue Perf 10 2d on cover with impressive 'ALBERT
DISTRICT/No 83/NORTH ADELIADE/ IOR / SU/SOUTH AUSTRALIA' [Independent Order of Rechabites temperance society] embossing (spelling error) on the flap, to "Stafford Town/New Zealand", GPO cds of MY9/71 and 'NZ/HOKITIKA/MY20/71' arrival backstamp, light
overall soiling & the embossing affected by an opening tear. A rare usage of the 3d inter-colonial rate 'across the ditch', especially so to a small New Zealand goldmining settlement. Ex Colonel Harry Napier.

ONE PENNY: 1d deep green SG 101 block of 36 (9x4) mostly regular compound perf 11½-12½x10 but the 6th and 9th vertical lines of perfs
are Perf 11½ which has created 16 irregular compound perf units, the horizontal perforating quite misaligned at places, small repair at upper-left, some trimmed perfs at the base and a few minor blemishes but generally very fine with large-part o.g.
& about ten units unmounted, Cat £8100++, for unused singles. The largest recorded multiple and a spectacular exhibition piece. Ex Colonel Harry Napier (where it was mistakenly stated that the left-hand vertical perfs were also 11½). Harry Lower's
mint block of 4 - graded 'A/A-' - sold to Michael Blake for $2330, and then for $3145. Harry Lower's mint block of 30 (10x3) of the Rouletted 1d SG 21 - graded 'A/C'; Cat £5400++ - sold for $16,890. [See the annotated illustration on our website: it
is likely that the two irregular rows of Perf 11½-12½ were applied to correct otherwise 'imperforate-between' pairs]

THREE PENCE: '3-PENCE' on 4d ultramarine SG 102 regular compound perf 11½-12½x10, misplaced perforations so cut from the sheet at top
and right to preserve the design, large-part o.g., Cat £650. A rare & underrated stamp. [Gibbons list this stamp as "pale ultramarine". In fact, most examples have full colour and some are quite deep]

THREE PENCE: '3-PENCE' on 4d ultramarine SG 102 regular compound Perf 11½-12½x10 a very scarce pair plus '3-PENCE' on 4d sky-blue
Imperforate single SG 67a (marginal stamp from the left of the sheet with margins clear to huge & marginal vertical watermark lines at left, minor separation fault at lower-left; unpriced by Gibbons), on cover to England "via Brindisi", GPO cds of
JU19/71 and London arrival cds of 8AU71 in red on the face, minor blemishes. An attractive cover of the highest importance. Ex Colonel Harry Napier and John Griffiths.
Only one other SG 102 cover has been recorded. This is the only cover recorded with SG 67a and, obviously, the only cover known bearing both these stamps.

TEN PENCE: 'TEN PENCE' in Blue on 9d yellow SG 78a with the Watermark Reversed, Overprint Sub-Type VI (First 'E' of 'PENCE' Higher),
part-Port Adelaide cds of DE8/68, Cat £1700. RPSofL Certificate (1919). Absent from 'Besancon'. Harry Lower's and Michael Blake's examples sold for $2990 & $2445 respectively.
A rare stamp that is seriously underrated, in part because it is listed by Gibbons under the Large Star Watermark issue. Often characterised as an 'error', in the catalogue for the John Griffiths' sale, it was noted that this was a trial printing on
the paper to be used for the new De La Rue 2d SG 152, issued in August 1868. We consider that it was either a trial printing or an emergency printing perhaps inadvertently on the new paper, and expect that all examples have the watermark reversed.
Don Pearce believes that only two sheets were printed, a total of only 480 stamps. Gary Diffen has recorded about 40 examples, some of which are defective or 'dwarf' stamps. No unused examples have been recorded.

4d dull purple SG 111 with the Watermark Reversed, GPO cds of OC7/71, Cat £325+. Rare. At least the equal of Harry Lower's normal
stamp that sold for $465. Because the 'V' is asymmetrical, it is clear that the watermark is reversed; see the next lot for the normal watermark.

watermark being one vertical marginal watermark line, a few reinforced perforations, GPO cds of MY29/72, Cat £975++, for normal singles. The equal-largest recorded multiple, greatly enhanced by the imperf and watermark varieties. Ex Colonel Harry
Napier and John Griffiths where it was stated that the left-hand unit has been "severed and rejoined", a conclusion that we do not support.

that sold for £2400. The 'Besancon' (I) example sold for SFr3840.

Marginal Value/Sheet-Number pieces comprising 9d pair with '6d./STAMPS/10720', 9d strip of 4 with '2/- 1982', 1/- block of 4 with '2/-
1788' and 2/- pair with '2/- 1144' (inverted), various perforations, large-part o.g. An extremely elusive and desirable quartet. [The value/sheet numbers in this issue were printed on the blank sheets of watermarked paper, and usually placed
centrally in the upper margin, which explains why they are much scarcer than on later issues, for which they were printed at the corner. The 'inverted' sheet number on the 2/- pair proves that it is in fact the watermark which is inverted].

Colonel Harry Napier and John Griffiths. The 'Besancon' (III) block of 16 sold for SFr5565. Michael Blake's block of 4 sold for $4890.
