Seated Dimes
Lot Symbol Lot Description CV or Estimate
44 image 1837 No Stars Large Date VG perfect grey original. Dimes were the first coins of the Seated Design to be released in 1837. Based on the British depiction of Britannia, the design was considered superior to the earlier Capped Bust coins, and judging by newspaper articles of the day, was well-received by the American public. 45 image 1837 No Stars Small Date attractive original grey VG. A nice coin for the grade. Author Brian Greer, who wrote the book "The Complete Guide to Liberty Seated Dimes" in 1992, has opined that the Small Date version of the No Stars variety is a bit scarcer than the Large Date. This is consistent with the present cataloger's experience. (Image) (imageb)

46 image 1853 No Arrows F. Even original grey. 95,000 Seated Dimes were produced at the old weight standard of 2.67 grams in the first couple of months of 1853 before the rising price of silver forced a nearly 7% reduction in weight (to 2.49 grams.) The weight reduction was denoted by adding arrows to the date. Over 12 million of the new lighter-weight coins were struck for circulation, being desperately needed to replace the heavier coins that were being hoarded for their metallic value. Thus, the No Arrows version of 1853 represents less than 1% of the mintage for that year. (Image) (imageb)

50 image 1856 Large Date VF nice original. Greer states that of the 5,780,000 dimes minted in Philadelphia in 1856, only 150,000 are of the Large Date variety. However, it's actual frequency of appearance has led more recent researchers to estimate it's mintage at about 400,000. Still a scarce coin, particularly compared to its Small Date counterpart. 51 image 1871-CC G details but w/ a 2.5mm hole @ K11 o/w nice original grey. All Carson City dimes from 1871 to 1874 are classic rarities. Bowers notes that they are highly prized in any state of preservation. In Greer's "Complete Guide to Liberty Seated Dimes", it is noted that "the 1871-CC dime is a great rarity and one of the keys to the series." Clearly the scarcity of this issue is not exaggerated as the Greysheet bid price (Feb 2024) for one in just Good-4 condition is $3,000! (Image) (imageb)

Mercury Dimes
Lot Symbol Lot Description CV or Estimate
58 image 1916-D AG original by wear. There is a significant gouge on the obv at K6 and a smaller one at K9 w/ corresponding marks on the rev. The gouges occurred long ago and have blended into the coin's color and wear pattern perfectly. Not that it matters much, but of the four mintmark positions for genuine 1916-D dimes, the placement and mintmark shape on the present offering is consistent w/ die #4. Of historical note, the 1916 production of Mercury Dimes did not start until the 4th quarter. That would have limited production in any event. But further, the Denver Mint received an unusually large order for quarter dollars (4 million) in late November of that year. This required the superintendent of the Denver Mint to suspend the production of all other denominations but the quarter to fulfill this emergency need. (This is the reason for the large production of 1916-D Barber Quarters.) By the time production of dimes at Denver resumed, the 1917-D dies were on hand and were used for all subsequent issues. Thus, the 1916-D was minted only to the extent of 264,000 pieces. Though there are several Barber coins whose mintages are lower (in some cases far lower) than that of the 1916-D Mercury Dime, its perennial popularity, as well as that of the Mercury Dime series in general, have kept the demand and market value of this issue rather high for decades. As early as 1940, dealers were offering "uncirculated" 1916-D dimes for $10 - a sharp contrast to the 85¢ price for a 1916-P, and a mere 60¢ for the 1916-S. (Image) (imageb)
