Lot 5212 - 1937 (May 3-6), Hindenburg First North America Flight Recovered Mail, posted Netherlands to Wooster, Ohio, large remnant of cover franked by 12½c Boy Scout Jamboree (#208), tied by Rotterdam-Waalhaven c.d.s. dated 1.V.1937, addressed to G. Thoolen care of Mr. Donald E. Dickason; typical charring and damage, but lower left corner of stamp, near-complete postmark and flight cachet, and address fully present and legible, Very Fine.

When the
Hindenburg exploded on May 6, 1937, more than 17,000 pieces of mail were incinerated. Due to the mail's storage directly above the control car, however, 367 covers were able to be salvaged by mid-July. Only 28 recovered covers originated in the Netherlands, this number 13.

Gerard Thoolen was a stamp dealer in s'Gravenhage, and had addressed this envelope to himself, care of Donald Dickason, owner of The Berkshire Exchange in Wooster, was a past-president of the American Airmail Society.
