Lot 496 - 1869, 30¢ ultramarine & carmine, flags inverted (Scott 121b), neat quartered cork cancel, exceptionally strong colors for this issue, with intense carmine and ultramarine on contrasting bright white paper; short corner perforation at upper left, completely sound in every other respect, Very Fine to Extremely Fine and rare, with only about 40 known examples, three of which are sound, this places nicely as one of the top examples from this historic rarity—by far the rarest of the 1869 inverts, ex- Lafayette, with "fault-free" 1991 P.F. certificate,

This was last offered as lot #1340 by Matthew Bennett on May 2, 2003, where it realized $37,500 vs. a catalog value of $70,000. It previously realized $22,000 vs. a $23,500 catalog value in the 1976 Siegel Rarities of the World Sale and is listed in the Siegel census as #121b-CAN-36
