Spink London Sale - 2007

The 'Lionheart' Collection of Great Britain and British Empire - Part XII - July 15, 2020

The "Lionheart" Collection part XII consists of over 300 lots from across Great Britain and the former British Empire; dotted throughout the sale are some lovely Specimen stamps including Ceylon with the 1912-25 1000r. with the broken crown and scroll variety, The popular K.U.T. 1922 set with values to £100 and the very rare Straits Settlements 1867 Surcharges. There is also a nice section of Cape of Good Hope Triangles and a fine selection of Canada and provinces Airmails including the 1927 25c. Tully and Medcalf London to London semi-official and Newfoundland with both the 1919 ‘Hawker’ 3c. and the 1927 ‘De Pinedo’ 60c. both on cover. Rhodesia is another area of note with superb imperforate varieties, a nice mint example of the perf. 15 Double Head £1 and a group of 1913 Admirals in attractive corner blocks of four. Highlights:
  • Canada. Semi-Official Air Mail - The Tully and Medcalf Disaster Flight. 1927 (August) 25c. green and yellow, unused with original gum. One hundred of these special stamps were printed bearing the portraits of the aviators Cpt. Terrance B. Tully and Lt. James V. Medcalf, ninety of these were used on cover and loaded onto the 'Sir John Carling' aircraft in London, Ontario; after the scheduled stop at Harbour Grace, Newfoundland on the long stretch to London, England on September 7th 1927 the aircraft plunged into the Atlantic Ocean killing both crew members, the aircraft was never found and thus all of its contents lost. One cover bearing the 25c. stamp which was not loaded onto the aircraft in error is known along with just a handful of unused examples, this may be considered to be the finest. An incredibly rare and important Airmail label. Signed Kessler, E. Diena and others and accompanied by E. Diena (1987) and Sergio Sismondo (2003) Certificates. Unitrade CLP 6, $50,000+
  • Southern Rhodesia. 1932 (1 May) Victoria Falls 3d. deep ultramarine vertical pair from the right of the sheet variety imperforate horizontally, with the unique Printer's Guide mark between the stamps (Rows 5 and 6); original lightly mounted gum, light horizontal gum crease between impressions. Fine and very rare with only twenty-two units existing in pairs, blocks of four and the block of six, this being unit 6 as identified in the Rhodesian Philatelist article (see footnote below). B.P.A. Certificate (2013). S.G. 30a
  • Malaya. Straits Settlements. 1867 (1 Sept.) Surcharged on Stamps of East India. 1½c. on ½a. blue, 2c. on 1. brown, 3c. on 1a. brown, 4c. on 1a. brown, 6c. on 2a. yellow, 8c. on 2a. yellow, 24c. on 8a. carmine and 32c. on 2a. yellow, each handstamped 'specimen' (Type SS1), the 1½c. and 6c. without gum, the others with either small part or part original gum, all of good colour and perfs and in very good condition for the issue. Some of the rarest British Colonial Specimen stamps
  • Newfoundland. Airmails. 1927 (20 May) envelope to Liverpool bearing 60c. black overprinted 'air mail/de pinedo.1927' in red, tied by machine cancellation and 'st. johns n'fld/may 20/1927' c.d.s. alongside, carried on the Trepassey-Rome-London flight; central vertical filing fold to envelope; a fine and attractive example of this Airmail rarity. S.G. 163
