Lot Symbol CatNo. Lot Description CV or Estimate
42 ng 1 image#1, 1851 3d Red on laid paper, a seldom seen example of this very elusive unused stamp, ample to mostly large margins all around, fresh unblemished color, horizontal crease, very fine appearance; an affordable example of a stamp that is missing from most mint Canada collections; 1969 BPA and 1994 PF certificates (Unitrade C$60,000.00). (Image) $24,000.00

SOLD for $12,000.00

43 ng 2 image#2, 1851 6d Slate violet on laid paper, a stunning unused single boasting exceptional physical characteristics, including possessing lavishly large and even margins all around, plus its color is wonderfully fresh and the impression is highly detailed on crisp clean paper that shows its laid lines well, extremely fine; it is doubtful that a larger margined unused 6d laid paper could be found; 1986 Greene Foundation certificate (Unitrade C$60,000.00).The 1851 Six Pence issue on laid paper is one of Canada's rarest and most difficult mint stamps. Very few examples exist unused, let alone with margins as large as those on the copy offered here. Fewer still exist completely sound. To find one that possesses both oversized margins and is completely without faults is next to impossible. In fact, a thorough review of past famous name sales of important Canadian stamps reveals only one other example which competes with this remarkable stamp, that being the part o.g. example we offered as part of the William H. Gross collection that realized $65,000.00 hammer in 2009. (Image) $27,500.00

SOLD for $37,500.00

44 O 3 image#3, 1851 12d Black on laid paper, a most presentable sound used example of this coveted classic rarity, three generous margins, fourth at left clear to cutting outer frame line towards the bottom, strong color and impression, bold centrally struck six-ring target postmark, completely free of faults, unlike most examples which are quite defective or heavily repaired, fine; 1994 PF certificate (Unitrade C$80,000.00).The extreme rarity of this high value is explained by a brief history of the production and usage of this stamp. A total of 51,000 stamps were printed, a mere 255 impressions of the 200 subject plate. By all standards for a regular issue stamp this is a miniscule printing. But the real rarity is seen in that in the short period from 1851-1854 only 1,450 were sold. The unsold remainders were then collected and destroyed. The apparent reason that so few were sold is that there were very few uses for this specific rate, and none of them were common destinations that saw much mail. The Twelve Penny Black of Canada has long been recognized as one the rarest and most desired stamps of the British Empire. Not only have few survived but obtaining quality collectable examples has proved even more difficult. The fragile laid paper was prone to damage and many existing copies have faults of various degrees leaving very few completely sound examples. As with all imperforates, obtaining nicely margined copies is a challenge. (Image) $140,000.00

46 O 5b image#5b, 1855 6d Greenish gray on wove paper, an eye-arresting used single, boasting extravagantly large margins all around, including a bit of the adjacent stamp at base, these margins being quite unlike any we have ever seen on this stamp, rich characteristic color and a sharp impression further enhances its tremendous eye-appeal, as does a relatively light centrally struck target cancel, simply superb; we doubt a nicer used single could be found; 1994 PF certificate. 50 ng 10 image#10, 1857 6d Reddish purple on very thick soft wove paper, an exciting unused example of this terribly rare stamp, being completely free of the myriad faults and repairs that plague the great majority of copies, plus it possesses numerous desirable physical characteristics rarely found converging on a single copy, including ample to mostly large even margins, rich luxuriant color in the distinctive shade that is characteristic only to the very thick soft paper printing, a razor-sharp impression and an uncommon overall freshness on clean white paper, extremely fine; a beautiful stamp and the first sound mint example of this rarity that we have had the pleasure of offering in our auctions; 1993 PF certificate (Unitrade C$40,000.00). (Image) $15,000.00

SOLD for $42,500.00

51 og 13 image#13, 1859 6d Brown violet perforated, a visually striking and extraordinarily fresh mint example of this rare and difficult stamp, possessing incredibly deep fresh color in a rich brown violet shade, crisp detailed impression, full even perforations which are frequently lacking on most copies (cut by scissors on the right and bottom sides well clear of the complete holes of the perforation) and actually quite well centered for this value despite the perforations being slightly in at bottom, virtually full original gum that is seldom found as fresh as this, relatively lightly hinged, very fine; not only are the first perforated stamps of Canada rare but invariably the perforations encroach on at least one side of the design, which is the way they are valued in the catalogs; the example offered here is far above the norm in its freshness and attractiveness; signed Holcombe and accompanied by his 1997 certificate (Unitrade C$60,000.00). (Image) $22,500.00

SOLD for $17,000.00
