Brun and Roumet and accompanied by 2011 Alexandre Roumet certificate (Scott #J5a; $1,400.00). (Image) €1,500

762 p Yvert #TT5b imageYvert #TT5b, 1897 Manuscript re "5" Surcharge on "2½ ANNAS" Error Surcharge on 10c Brown postage due, this was a provisional hand correction that was applied to the stamp so the postage due could be used for its proper denomination, next to the stamp in the same ink was written the date "26/11/97" and signature validating the usage, tied to piece by a 26 November 97 c.d.s. cancel, attractive with fine center; this correction was done in both red and black ink and both are collected on piece for the validation signature and date; it is not known how many corrected examples were made, but it is quite likely that less than ten are known of each color; a great provisional rarity of the French offices in Zanzibar; signed Champion; unlisted in Scott. John Lodrington on H.M.Ship Triumph cruising off Cape Clear, Ireland with the intention of intercepting a French squadron to his marine agents in London, backstamped with undated "Plymouth Dock" circular handstamp and London arrival datestamp of October 8, 1798.Interesting contents of the letter which begins authorizing the payments of what appears to have been huge sums of money, then to discussing prize money.... "I am to hope L'Hercule has produced something considerable rather upwards of Thirty Pounds."....then to criticism of his superior officers.... "Lord have mercy upon us, & keep us from mad Commodores."....and finally.... "his rash mode of conduct has crippled the Saturn's main mast."
