Witherell's Sale - 1

The Alton Holje Barnes Cape of Good Hope Stamp Collection Auction - January 16, 2019

We welcome you to our first sale on StampAuctionNetwork and are pleased to offer The Cape of Good Hope stamps collected by, Alton Holje Barnes throughout his lifetime. Barnes was the son of Ray Barnes and Rose Holje, the daughter of Martin Holje, owner of California Glue Works and head of the prominent 19th-century Bay Area Holje family. The family initially resided in San Francisco, but eventually moved to a beautiful Victorian in Calistoga known as Maplewood. Our Philatelist adviser describes this discovery as follows:

As an advanced philatelist with a half-century of experience, I am often called upon to value family stamp collections. I have learned to expect very little. So I was surprised and very impressed with this marvelous Cape of Good Hope 19th century triangles collection which seems to have been put away well over 70 years ago.

Lovingly assembled by a serious student of the triangles, the collection offers multiple copies of all varieties including the storied and elusive Solomon Wood Blocks. As well, it features studies of forgeries and a nice array of postal history from the same period. Well preserved with literally no “space fillers”, the condition and diversity of this collection should be viewed as a rare find for serious Cape of Good Hope collectors. It was truly a delight to organize this collection into lots, which should please dealers and collectors alike.

Respectfully, Mark Ludwig, Philatelist
