EXTREMELY FINE GEM. THE ONLY RECORDED HANDSTAMP-CANCELLED PAIR OF THE NEW YORK POSTMASTER'S PROVISIONAL WITHOUT SIGNATURE, AS WELL AS THE ONLY RECORDED SOUND PAIR.

In Chronicle 115 (p. 163), Philip Wall records eight pairs of the without signature variety and calls this example "the real gem of the 9X1d used pairs..." (now 9X1e). The other seven all have pen cancels and defects in one or both stamps. This pair is also remarkable as an example of the double recut at bottom Position 31.
