AN OUTSTANDING GROUP OF RARE 1850'S COUNTY NAME POSTMARKS. THIS IS THE LARGEST COLLECTION WE HAVE OFFERED IN A SINGLE LOT.

During the life of the 1851-57 Issue, postmarks were required to show only the name of the town, state, month and day of mailing. A small number of towns also incorporated the county or postmaster name into the datestamp, though this practice would not become widespread until the 1880's. According to the Simpson-Alexander book, nearly all of the devices which incorporated the county name originate from Zevely family of handstamp manufacturers. All of the postmarks in this lot are scarce, and some are extremely rare or unique. This is a wonderful opportunity to acquire a large number of these desirable handstamps at one time.
