VERY FINE APPEARANCE. AN IMPORTANT 1851 ISSUE COVER, BEARING THE LARGER OF TWO RECORDED USED BLOCKS OF THE ONE-CENT FROM PLATE ONE EARLY. THIS IS THE ONLY PLATE ONE EARLY BLOCK KNOWN ON COVER.

The 6c transcontinental rate was effective from July 1, 1851, to April 1, 1855. Approximately seven such West Coast multiples are known to us, but this is the only one with a block. The other known used Plate 1 Early block is off cover (offered as lot 621 in this sale).
