Three-color franking tied by clear strikes of red "New York Supplementary Sep. 20" Type D circular datestamp on mostly complete 1872 blue folded cover containing part of ship's register for the Pelayo, to Barcelona, Spain, blue merchant's return handstamp, two-line "Estrangero/Barcelona" handstamp and "5R" due marking, receiving backstamp, negligible folds clear of stamps, some small bleached specks, still Fine and colorful, an extremely rare franking and Supplementary Mail usage, this cover was the subject of much study by Mr. Senchuk who consulted numerous students in the field, the "Estrangero/Barcelona" marking was typically used on maritime mail arriving in Barcelona, this may have been carried from Havana to Cadiz and then Barcelona on the Spanish Line, it is also the earliest recorded usage of the Supplementary Mail Ty. D cancel, ex Krug, with 1957 P.F. and 2006 A.P.S. certificates (Image)
