VERY FINE. PRESIDENT TEDDY ROOSEVELT APPOINTS PAT GARRETT--LEGENDARY LAWMAN AND THE KILLER OF "BILLY THE KID"--TO THE POSITION OF CUSTOMS COLLECTOR IN TEXAS.

According to the website http://www.legendsofamerica.com/WE-PatGarrett.html, Garrett and Billy the Kid were gambling buddies in the saloon where Garrett worked, and were seen together so often they took the nicknames "Big Casino" and "Little Casino". In November 1880 Garrett was appointed Lincoln County Sheriff, and immediately vowed to rein in lawlessness, starting with his friend Billy. It took him almost a year and a half to capture Billy, who then escaped from prison after killing two guards. Garrett caught up with him at a ranch where he used to work and killed Billy the Kid. Years later President Roosevelt, obsessed with western lawmen, appointed Garrett to this position at the urging of some influential lobbyists.
