EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A STUNNING USED EXAMPLE OF THE 7-CENT NATIONAL BANK NOTE COMPANY GRILLED ISSUE WITH THE DESIRABLE I GRILL. THIS STAMP HAS BEEN GRADED SUPERB 98 BY P.S.E., WHICH IS THE HIGHEST GRADE AWARDED TO DATE.
The I Grill is slightly smaller in size than the H Grill and is more difficult to find, especially on the higher denominations. We started keeping track of the different grill types approximately seven years ago, and this is only the fifth we have offered for the 7c in any condition. If Scott Catalogue were consistent, they would list the I Grill separately, as they do for the 1867-68 Grilled Issues.
P.S.E. encapsulated (Superb 98, SMQ $7,850.00). This is the highest grade awarded to date and only one other shares this grade. SMQ and the Population Report do not differentiate between the two grill types, but the other example to achieve this grade is an H Grill, and it realized $9,500 hammer in our recent Sale 976. EXTREMELY FINE GEM. AN ABSOLUTELY SUPERB ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 7-CENT 1870 NATIONAL BANK NOTE ISSUE IN THE FINEST CONDITION ATTAINABLE. THIS MAGNIFICENT STAMP HAS BEEN AWARDED THE GRADE OF XF-SUPERB 95 BY P.S.E., WHICH IS THE HIGHEST GRADE AWARDED TO DATE. IT IS THE ONLY EXAMPLE TO ACHIEVE THIS GRADE.
Ex Grunin. P.S.E. encapsulated (OGph, XF-Superb 95, SMQ $4,900.00). This is the highest grade awarded to date and the only example to achieve this grade. As another indicator of the rarity of this particular stamp, we last offered it in December 2000 where it realized $5,750 hammer, which still stands as a record for the highest price paid in one of our auctions for an original gum example of Scott 149. EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A RARE MINT NEVER-HINGED EXAMPLE OF THE 10-CENT 1879 AMERICAN BANK NOTE COMPANY ISSUE WITH SECRET MARK. THIS STUNNING STAMP HAS BEEN GRADED XF-SUPERB 95 BY P.S.E., WHICH IS THE HIGHEST GRADE AWARDED TO DATE.
Unlike other values of the 1879 Issue, there are virtually no 10c stamps in Mint Never-Hinged condition. A thorough review of auction catalogues, including sales of the Caspary, Close, Sinkler, Col. Green, Lilly, Braus, Wunderlich and Klein collections, among others, produced no Mint N.H. singles and no blocks containing Mint N.H. stamps. Using Power Search, we located a block of six with three Mint N.H. stamps and three other unduplicated copies. We doubt that more than a half-dozen or so Mint N.H. copies exist in total.
P.S.E. encapsulated (XF-Superb 95, SMQ $33,500.00). This is the highest grade awarded to date. Curiously, only two Mint N.H. have been graded, and both were graded equally. (Image)
EXTREMELY FINE EXAMPLE OF THE RARE 12-CENT 1880 AMERICAN BANK NOTE COMPANY SPECIAL PRINTING. PROBABLY FEWER THAN 75 COPIES EXIST, AND THIS IS ONE OF THE FINEST IN EXISTENCE.
Our recently updated census records for Scott 198 contain approximately 60 certified examples. Of these, fully one-third have small flaws (mostly thin spots).
Unpublished Census No. 198-UNC-11. P.S.E. encapsulated (XF-Superb 95, SMQ $32,000.00) (Image)
EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB MINT NEVER-HINGED EXAMPLE OF THE 15-CENT 1879 AMERICAN BANK NOTE COMPANY ISSUE. THIS MAGNIFICENT STAMP HAS BEEN AWARDED THE GRADE OF SUPERB 98 BY P.S.E.
This issue is often found in Mint N.H. condition, as several sheets have been broken in the past ten years. However, most of the stamps in these sheets are somewhat off-center, and examples such as this are very rare.
P.S.E. encapsulated (Superb 98, SMQ $8,400.00). Only one has graded higher to date (at 100, offered in our Whitman sale), and only two others share this grade. None have been awarded this grade since we last offered this 98 in November 2007. (Image)

With 200X P.S.E. certificate (XF-Superb 95 Jumbo, unpriced in SMQ above the grade of 95, SMQ $5,700.00 as 95). This is the highest grade awarded to date and the only example to achieve this grade. (Image)
