VERY FINE AND CHOICE. A BEAUTIFUL EXAMPLE OF THE 2-CENT 1880 AMERICAN BANK NOTE COMPANY SPECIAL PRINTING.
Our recently updated census records for Scott 193 contain 47 certified examples, of which almost half half faults (mostly thins). Of the sound examples, nearly all are centered to top or one side. The example offered here, with well-proportioned margins, should be considered desirable.
Unpublished Census No. 193-UNC-25. With 2009 P.S.E. certificate (VF 80, SMQ $26,000.00). Only one has graded higher to date and only one other shares this grade. (Image)

VERY FINE AND CHOICE. A GORGEOUS SOUND AND WELL-CENTERED EXAMPLE OF THE 3-CENT 1880 AMERICAN BANK NOTE COMPANY SPECIAL PRINTING. -- ONLY FOURTEEN EXAMPLES ARE RECORDED IN OUR CENSUS, MAKING THIS ONE OF THE RAREST OF ALL SPECIAL PRINTINGS.
Our census of Scott 194 (available at http://www.siegelauctions.com/dynamic/census/194/194.pdf ) contains only fourteen examples. Its rarity matches or exceeds the most valuable Special Printings, such as Scott Nos. 180 (24 known), 181 (10 known), 203 (20 known), 204 (18 known), 205C (21 known) and 211D (25 known). In fact, it is the rarest of any Bank Note Special Printing among the Scott-listed "sets" (167-177 and 192-202).
Census No. 194-UNC-04. 1969 and 2002 P.F. certificates no longer accompany. Ex Drucker. With 2009 P.S.E. certificate (VF 80, SMQ $255,000.00) (Image)
EXTREMELY FINE EXAMPLE OF THE 6-CENT 1880 AMERICAN BANK NOTE COMPANY SPECIAL PRINTING. FEWER THAN 30 ARE BELIEVED TO EXIST, AND THIS IS EASILY ONE OF THE FINEST CONTAINED IN OUR RECORDS.
Our recently updated census records contain 26 certified examples of Scott 195, an oddly low number. Some of the stamps submitted as the Special Printing, but certified as the regular issue, Scott 186, could in fact be Special Printing stamps (the two are difficult to tell apart). We record another three stamps which we feel are possibly Scott 195, despite previous P.F. certification.
Unpublished Census No. 195-CAN-12. Ex T. Charlton Henry, Klein and Drucker. 1975, 1988 and 2002 P.F. certificates no longer accompany. With 2009 P.S.E. certificate (XF 90, SMQ $170,000.00). This is the highest grade awarded to date and the only example to achieve this grade, (Image)
EXTREMELY FINE GEM. A STUNNING EXAMPLE OF THE 1880 7-CENT AMERICAN BANK NOTE COMPANY SPECIAL PRINTING.
Our recently updated census records for Scott 196 contain approximately 80 certified examples. It is the most common of the soft-paper Special Printings because the 7c was no longer in production in 1880 and, probably to some degree, because it can be easily identified since there is no regular issue on soft paper.
Unpublished Census No. 196-UNC-20. With 1993 and 2004 P.F. certificates. With 2009 P.S.E. certificate (XF 90, SMQ $26,000.00). We feel SMQ value is accurate for this stamp in this grade -- this exact copy realized $18,000 hammer in our Sale 881 in 2004. (Image)
EXTREMELY FINE EXAMPLE OF THE RARE 12-CENT 1880 AMERICAN BANK NOTE COMPANY SPECIAL PRINTING. PROBABLY FEWER THAN 75 COPIES EXIST.
Our recently updated census records for Scott 198 contain approximately 60 certified examples. Of these, fully one-third have small flaws (mostly thin spots).
Unpublished Census No. 198-UNC-02. 1948 and 1999 P.F. certificates no longer accompany. With 2009 P.S.E. certificate (XF 90, SMQ $29,000.00) (Image)
VERY FINE AND CHOICE. A SCARCE SOUND EXAMPLE OF THE 15-CENT 1880 AMERICAN BANK NOTE COMPANY SPECIAL PRINTING. ONLY 37 ARE RECORDED IN OUR CENSUS.
Our recent review of the records of the Philatelic Foundation found only 37 certified examples of Scott 199.
Unpublished Census No. 199-UNC-07. Ex Lutwak and Zoellner. With 1954 and 1998 P.F. certificates. (Image)
VERY FINE APPEARANCE. ONE OF THE RAREST OF ALL BANK NOTE SPECIAL PRINTINGS. ONLY 20 ARE RECORDED IN OUR CENSUS.
Our census of Scott 203 (available at http://www.siegelauctions.com/dynamic/census/203/203.pdf ) contains only 19 stamps which are available to collectors. The 20th copy is in the Miller collection at The New York Public Library.
Census No. 203-UNC-02. Ex Mielstrup and "Newport". With 1952 and 2008 P.F. certificates (Image)
ALMOST FINE AND EXTREMELY RARE EXAMPLE OF THE 5-CENT 1880 AMERICAN BANK NOTE COMPANY SOFT-PAPER SPECIAL PRINTING. ONLY 18 ARE RECORDED.
The 5c 1880 Special Printing on soft paper is the second most elusive of the Bank Note Special printings. Our census of Scott 204 (available at http://siegelauctions.com/enc/census/204.pdf) records only 18 copies of this stamp, including one example in the Miller collection at The New York Public Library. About one-third of the known stamps have minor faults.
Census No. 204-UNC-08. With 1949 and 2008 P.F. certificates. (Image)
EXTREMELY FINE. THE 5-CENT GARFIELD IS ONE OF THE RAREST OF THE SPECIAL PRINTINGS. THIS SUPERB EXAMPLE IS ONE OF 21 RECORDED.
This elusive Special Printing was the subject of an informative article by William E. Mooz in the Chronicle, February 1992. His research provides strong evidence that the stamps recognized as Scott 205C are a small part of the 2,463 sold as Special Printings through the Third Asst. PMG, and that regular issues were used to fill the backlog of orders for the 5c Garfield.
Our census of Scott 205C (available at http://www.siegelauctions.com/dynamic/census/205C/205C.pdf ) illustrates the 21 recorded examples (only three have faults).
Census No. 205C-UNC-07. Ex Floyd. P.F. certificate nos. 410 and 254720 no longer accompany. With 2009 P.S.E. certificate (XF 90, SMQ $154,000.00). Only one has graded higher to date and only three others share this grade. (Image)
EXTREMELY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL EXAMPLE OF THE RARE 4-CENT 1883 AMERICAN BANK NOTE COMPANY SPECIAL PRINTING. THIS IS ONE OF THE RAREST OF ALL SPECIAL PRINTINGS -- ONLY 26 ARE RECORDED.
Our census of the 4c 1883 Special Printing (available at http://www.siegelauctions.com/dynamic/census/211D/211D.pdf ) contains 26 stamps offered as No. 211D, of which 25 have been certified by The Philatelic Foundation. Post Office Department records indicate that only 26 were sold. Of the known copies, five have small faults.
Census No. 211D-UNC-18. P.F. certificate no. 100300 no longer accompanies. With 2009 P.S.E. certificates (XF 90, SMQ $145,000.00). This is the highest grade awarded to date and the only example to achieve this grade. (Image)
