VERY FINE. ONE OF THE MOST OUTSTANDING AMERICAN ANTI-SLAVERY COVERS EXTANT, COMBINING A RARE LETTERHEAD DESIGN MEMORIALIZING ELIJAH LOVEJOY WITH THE 5-CENT 1847 ISSUE AND AN AUTOGRAPH LETTER FROM THE 19TH CENTURY ABOLITIONIST, LEWIS TAPPAN.
According to Wikipedia, Elijah Parish Lovejoy (1802-37) was an American Presbyterian minister, journalist and newspaper editor who was murdered by a mob in Alton, Illinois, for his abolitionist views. On November 7, 1837, a pro-slavery mob approached a warehouse where Lovejoy's printing press was located. Lovejoy and his supporters exchanged gunfire with the mob. During the fight, Lovejoy was shot five times with a shotgun and died on the spot. He was hailed as a martyr by abolitionists and proponents of freedom of the press. (Image)

EXTREMELY FINE. THIS MAGNIFICENT COVER IS ARGUABLY THE GREATEST OF ALL ANTI-SLAVERY ENVELOPES USED IN THE UNITED STATES. THE BRITISH DESIGN IS EXTREMELY RARE, AND THE USE OF THE 3-CENT 1851 ISSUE FOR UNITED STATES POSTAGE ADDS ANOTHER DIMENSION OF RARITY.
The African man at left holds a Bible, referencing Isaiah 58:6: "...loose the bands of wickedness, undo the heavy burdens, let the oppressed go free and break every yoke."
