Ex Beals (Image)
VERY FINE. AN EXTREMELY RARE RAILROAD PROPAGANDA ENVELOPE PREPARED FOR THE CHORPENNING ROUTE.
This is an extremely rare use of the Chorpenning Route railroad propaganda envelope during the period when the route was operating. A few other examples are known used later, after the contract was cancelled.
Ex Hall (Image)
EXTREMELY FINE. THIS IS THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE OF THIS RAILROAD PROPAGANDA DESIGN, WHICH HAS THE "VIA PLACERVILLE" CHORPENNING ROUTE DESIGNATION. A FABULOUS WESTERN COVER.
Folsom City is located between Sacramento and Placerville. Its proximity to the Chorpenning Route warranted the production of envelopes with the "via Placerville" route designation. However, these envelopes must have seen very limited use, because all are rare, and this cover is the only known example of this particular design.
Illustrated in Letters of Gold (p. 285). Ex Wiltsee, Jessup, Haas and Grunin. (Image)
EXTREMELY FINE. AN IMMACULATE EXAMPLE OF THIS EXCEEDINGLY RARE WESTERN RAILROAD PROPAGANDA DESIGN WITH THE CHORPENNING ROUTE DESIGNATION.
Fewer than eight examples of this railroad propaganda design are known to us with the "Via Placerville and Salt Lake" Chorpenning Route designation. The same design is more common with the "Via Los Angeles" Butterfield Route designation. This is one of the two finest of the known covers bearing stamps.
Illustrated in Letters of Gold (p. 283). Ex Lehman and Grunin. (Image)
VERY FINE. A WONDERFUL EXAMPLE OF THIS RARE "PUTT'S OVERLAND ENVELOPE" AND UNIQUE WITH THE TWO 10-CENT 1857 ISSUE STAMPS.
The different "Putt's Overland Envelopes" were published to promote the cause of building a railroad to replace the stagecoach mail route. All of the text on front and back is a sarcastic celebration of "Uncle Sam's Great Mule Railroad."
Ex West, Jessup, Pearce and Haas. (Image)
VERY FINE. THE ONLY RECORDED "PUTT'S OVERLAND ENVELOPE" ADDRESSED TO BRIGHAM YOUNG, MORMON LEADER AND FORMER GOVERNOR OF UTAH TERRITORY.
The different "Putt's Overland Envelopes" were published to promote the cause of building a railroad to replace the stagecoach mail route. All of the text on front and back is a sarcastic celebration of "Uncle Sam's Great Mule Railroad." This design is much rarer than the deisign in lot 103.
Illustrated in Letters of Gold (p. 283). Ex Parker, Haas and Grunin. (Image)
