FINE-VERY FINE. A RARE SET OF THE PHILIPPINES 1900 SPECIAL PRINTING WITH THE "SPECIMEN" OVERPRINTS. VERY FEW ARE KNOWN.

Only one pane of each was overprinted for the Paris and Pan-American Expositions. Many were handstamped "Specimen" before the expositions and were destroyed soon after, which accounts for their rarity.

Ex Tows and Todd. Scott Catalogue does not distinguish between the "Specimen", hand-signed or 1904 handstamped versions of the Special Printings, and catalogue value has not changed in many years. (Image)

FINE-VERY FINE. A RARE COMPLETE SET OF THE PHILIPPINES 1900 SPECIAL PRINTING.

Only one pane of each was overprinted for the Paris and Pan-American Expositions. Many were handstamped "Specimen" before the expositions and were destroyed soon after. A small quantity was signed in pencil by Bartels (as is the set offered here) to denote that they came from these panes. In 1904 or later another quantity was handstamped "Special Surcharge" in red ink. The scarcest are those with "Specimen" overprints and those signed in pencil by Bartels.
