VERY FINE AND CHOICE. ONLY TWO ARE RECORDED WITH THE PLATE NUMBERS, AND THIS IS THE FINER OF THE TWO. ASIDE FROM THE PLATE NUMBER, THE STAMP ITSELF IS ONE OF THE MOST DESIRABLE EXAMPLES OF THE 2-CENT DARK BROWN 1875 CONTINENTAL BANK NOTE COMPANY SPECIAL PRINTING. FROM THE EARL OF CRAWFORD STRIP.
Our recently updated census records for Scott 168 contain only 55 copies certified as genuine. Of these, 22 have straight edges on at least one side and several are faulty. In fact, almost all known examples of the 2c 1875 Special Printing are off center. One other is known with the plate number (at top) but the leftmost number is not visible. The stamp offered here comes from the Earl of Crawford bottom selvage strip of four with the plate number and imprint. This strip was spared the usual fate of scissors-separation.
Unpublished Census No. 168-UNC-54. Ex Earl of Crawford, Ackerman, Concord and Hinrichs. With 2004 P.F. certificate (Image)

Our recently updated census records for Scott 170 contain 33 certified examples. Of these, approximately half have full perforations on all sides, including several which are faulty. EXTREMELY FINE GEM. THIS IS WITHOUT QUESTION THE FINEST EXAMPLE OF THE 7-CENT 1875 CONTINENTAL BANK NOTE COMPANY SPECIAL PRINTING IN EXISTENCE. THIS SENSATIONAL STAMP HAS BEEN AWARDED THE GRADE OF XF-SUPERB 95 BY P.S.E.
Our recently updated census records for Scott 171 contain 70 certified examples. Most stamps were scissors-separated, affecting the perforations on at least one side and in some cases two or three sides. The stamp offered here, with intact perforations on all sides, superb centering, and remarkably vibrant color is, in our opinion, the ultimate copy for the connoisseur collector.
Unpublished Census No. 171-UNC-69. With 1967 and 1989 P.F. and 2008 P.S.E. certificates (XF-Superb 95). As an indication of the rarity of this stamp in better grades, SMQ does not even price this above the grade of 80, and the next highest grade in the P.S.E. Population Report is Fine 70. (Image)
