VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE EXAMPLE OF THE 1851 "SIX CENTS" FRANKLIN ESSAY PRODUCED BY TOPPAN, CARPENTER & COMPANY.
According to Ashbrook's One-Cent book, a 6c stamp was contemplated to pay the single-letter rate for distances over 3,000 miles. According to Brazer, it appears that the 6c was changed to 1c because of the greater need for this value. (Image)

VERY FINE AND CHOICE. AN EXCEEDINGLY RARE ESSAY FOR THE 3-CENT 1851 ISSUE, PRODUCED BY RAWDON, WRIGHT, HATCH & EDSON. ONLY TWO ARE REPORTED TO EXIST.
Rawdon, Wright, Hatch & Edson, printers of the 1847 Issue, lost the 1851 contract to Toppan, Carpenter, Casilear & Company. RWH&E produced this essay for the 3c value to submit with their proposal. The Brazer book states that this is probably unique, but a second copy, cut to stamp size, was offered in the Brazer sale. This example is by far the finer of the two. (Image)
