Aug. 3" circular datestamp on yellow cover to Carthage Ind., pulled perf at lower left, some overall wear, otherwise Fine, exceedingly scarce, ex Chase and Krug, with note on back from Ashbrook stating"This cover was submitted to me by Dr. Carroll Chase in June 1956 -- his opinion was 'probably a part perforated stamp but absolute proof is lacking' I agree 100% with this opinion", further note from Ashbrook that "This cover bears the guarantee of J.M. Bartels and no doubt was in an original find made by him", the lack of scissors-separation at sides speaks in its favor as does an accompanying note stating that this was compared to a pair of No. 25b also used from Jonesboro and that the colors and shift of perforations are identical and that they likely came from the same sheet (see our Piller sale for this item), with 1957 P.F. certificate stating that "it is genuine as far as can be determined", Scott Retail as used pair $10,000.00 (Image)

252 c 3c Dull Red, Ty. IV, Imperforate (26A var).> Position 8R10E, huge top sheet margin, extra large margins at sides and full at bottom, beautiful rich color, trivial corner crease, tied by Millville N.Y. Aug. 1
circular datestamp on small yellow cover3c Dull Red, Ty. IV, Imperforate (26A var). Position 8R10E, huge top sheet margin, extra large margins at sides and full at bottom, beautiful rich color, trivial corner crease, tied by "Millville N.Y. Aug. 1" circular datestamp on small yellow cover to South Boston

EXTREMELY FINE. THIS IS THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE OF THE 3-CENT 1857 TYPE IV IN FULLY IMPERFORATE STATE. A GREAT RARITY, WHICH IS KNOWN TO SPECIALISTS BUT IS NOT YET LISTED IN THE SCOTT CATALOGUE.

Dr. Chase's note on back reads, "8R10E. This appears to be an imperforate stamp. It is not from the left margin of the pane. C.C." The second sentence recognizes that a top left corner position stamp might have large enough margins to trim, but that this stamp comes from an interior position on the top row, which would make the huge side margins more indicative of a completely imperforate stamp.

Ex Beals and Piller. With 1988 P.F. certificate as "fully imperforate" (Image)
