VERY FINE AND ATTRACTIVE USED EXAMPLE OF THE RARE 1857 ONE-CENT TYPE IA PERFORATED.
The Type Ia stamps were produced from 18 positions in the bottom row of Plate 4. The most distinctive feature of Plate 4 is that the top row was entered with the designs complete at top (Type II), and the bottom row was entered with designs complete or nearly complete at bottom (Types Ia and Ic).

VERY FINE AND CHOICE. A SCARCE COMBINATION PAIR OF THE ONE-CENT 1857 TYPE Ic AND IIIa PERFORATED.
A review of the Neinken book shows that there are only six possible places on the plate that would yield this combination (two are horizontal pairs). The Type Ic position here (and one other on the plate) are so-called swing positions, which became Type II as the plate wore.

VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE AND SPECTACULAR TOP-ROW PLATE 4 PERFORATED ONE-CENT STAMP WITH WIDE-SPACED PERFORATIONS.
The Neinken One-cent book (p. 279) describes the uneven layout of Plate 4, with the top and bottom rows somewhat further apart than the other eight rows of the plate. This irregularity resulted in perfs cutting into the designs of the top or bottom rows. However, some stamps are known with wide-spaced perforations. Only bottom row (Ty. Ia) and top row (Ty. II) stamps from Plate 4 come with extra-wide top and bottom margins. If the sheet was fed in one direction, Type Ia wide-spacing stamps resulted. In the opposite direction, Type II wide-spaced stamps were produced. The Scott Catalogue footnote after No. 19 (Ty. Ia) describes this characteristic, but it is not noted after No. 20 from Plate 4.

EXTREMELY FINE. A RARE SOUND AND CENTERED UNUSED EXAMPLE OF THE PERFORATED 1857 ONE-CENT TYPE III STAMP.
This stamp was made from Plate 4, which had narrow spacing between stamps. It originally produced imperforate stamps and was used only briefly after the introduction of perforations in 1857 before being discontinued. The narrow spacing on the plate, combined with the difficulties experienced when perforations were first introduced, accounts for the rarity of well-centered stamps made from this plate.
