EXTREMELY FINE APPEARING EXAMPLE OF THE 1851 ONE-CENT IMPERFORATE TYPE Ia.
Stamps printed from Plate 4 were issued in April, May and briefly in June 1857 before perforations were introduced. The relatively small number of imperforate Plate 4 stamps issued during this period explains the rarity and desirability of any of the imperforate stamp types produced from this plate (Ia, Ic, II, III and IIIa). The extremely rare Type Ia, showing the full design at bottom, was furnished only by 18 of the 200 subjects on Plate 4 (the remaining two bottom-row positions were sub-type Ic).
Ex Twigg-Smith. With 1968 and 2001 P.F. certificates (Image)

VERY FINE. AN OUTSTANDING AND EXCEEDINGLY RARE 1851 ONE-CENT IMPERFORATE MULTIPLE FROM PLATE 4, COMBINING TYPE Ia FROM THE BOTTOM ROW WITH TYPE IIIa FROM THE NINTH ROW. THIS MARVELOUS PAIR GRACED THE IMPORTANT COLLECTIONS FORMED BY SAUL NEWBURY AND JOHN C. CHAPIN.
The extremely rare Type Ia, showing the full design at bottom, was furnished only by 18 of the 200 subjects on Plate 4 (the remaining two bottom-row positions were sub-type Ic). The Type Ia position in this pair, 100L4, comes from the bottom right corner of the left pane. The adjoining stamp from the end of the ninth row is Type IIIa.
Ex Newbury and Chapin. With 1964 P.F. certificate issued to John C. Chapin after the Newbury sale (and signed by Louise Boyd Dale) and 2003 P.F. certificate issued to Perry Hansen after some of the Chapin collection was sold through auction. Scott Retail as a combination pair. (Image)

EXTREMELY FINE. AN EXCEEDINGLY RARE 1851 ONE-CENT IMPERFORATE PAIR COMBINING TYPES III AND Ic, WHICH EXISTS ONLY IN TWO PLACES ON THE PLATE.
Type Ic occurs on only ten of the 200 positions from Plate 4 and does not occur on any other plate. Two of these ten are "swing positions" (41R4 and 49R4), which developed gaps at either top or bottom as the plate wore during use, becoming Type IIIa. Position 82L4 also transformed from a Type IIIa to Type III as the plate was used, when a break in the bottom line developed. In the pair offered here, we have the combination of Type III (breaks at top and bottom) and Type Ic. As is well known, most stamps printed from Plate 4 were issued with perforations. Imperforate stamps from Plate 4 are much rarer. The imperforate Type III-Ic combination pair offered here comes from the tiny fraction of production after Position 82L4 changed to Type III and before perforations were introduced in July 1857.
Ex Colonel E. H. R. Green, Rose and Chapin. Signed Ashbrook. With 2003 P.F. certificate. This combination is listed but unpriced in Scott (combined value of Nos. 6b and 8 is $6,250.00). (Image)

Plate 4 Type II stamps only come from the top row where they show full ornaments at top, mirroring the bottom row where the rare Type Ia stamps have full plumes at bottom.
