Agriculture Department
Lot Sym. Lot Description
3766 c image1c Agriculture (O1). Well-centered, vivid color, few short perfs at top, tied by cork cancel on "Department of Agriculture Official Business" label on complete folded wrapper to Westover Md., with original printed livestock form dated Nov. 15, 1873 (returnable Jan. 1, 1874), very faintly toned, Very Fine, this is No. 6 in the Campbell census (Chronicle No. 194, May 2002), which listed one cover and seven labels with the 1c Agriculture (the 2004 Markovits sale catalogue reported ten covers or labels) (Image) E. 1,000-1,500

SOLD for $2,200.00
Will close during Public Auction
3767 c image2c Agriculture (O2). Cancelled by bright red circular cork cancel, matching "Washington D.C. Feb. 12" (1875) circular datestamp on "Department of Agriculture, Official Business" imprint cover to Indiana Senator Daniel D. Pratt at the Capitol, neat receipt docketing, refolded around edges (flap inside and sealed shut), small sealed tear at top left

VERY FINE APPEARANCE AND BEAUTIFULLY CANCELLED IN RED. ONE OF SEVEN RECORDED COVERS (AND FIVE WRAPPERS) WITH THE 2-CENT AGRICULTURE DEPARTMENT STAMP.

Alan C. Campbell reported six 2c covers and four wrappers in his 2002 census of Agriculture covers (Chronicle No. 194), but the 2004 Bennett catalogue of the Markovits collection raised the numbers to seven and five. Based on the data in the Campbell census, this is the only 2c Agriculture cover postmarked in red.

E. 2,500-3,500

SOLD for $2,700.00
Will close during Public Auction
3768   image3c Agriculture (O3). Vivid color, trivial corner crease, tied by purple small quartered cork cancel, matching "Washington D.C. Jun. 6 6PM 1878" circular datestamp on cover front with Department of Agriculture penalty imprint (very early use), addressed to the Commissioner of Crown Lands in Toronto, Canada, "For Mailing Jun. 6, 1878" blue ribbon-marker datestamp, "Toronto Ont. AM JU 8 78" receiving backstamp on part of flap which remains (most of back removed), Very Fine appearance, this is the only 3c Agriculture cover to Canada in Campbell's 2002 census (Chronicle No. 194), but the 2004 Markovits catalog reported additional covers, the use of the Official stamp on a penalty entire is very unusual, presumably it was necessary to pay the 3c rate to Canada (Image) E. 750-1,000

SOLD for $4,750.00
Will close during Public Auction
3769 c image3c Agriculture (O3). Superbly centered, tied by quartered cork cancel, "Washington D.C. Jul. 30" circular datestamp on "Department of Agriculture, Official Business" imprint cover to Laconia Ind., upper right corner slightly clipped, otherwise Very Fine, Campbell reported 11 covers (2002) but Markovits catalog (2004) reports 21 covers with the 3c Agriculture (Image) (imagea) E. 500-750

SOLD for $800.00
Will close during Public Auction
3769A c image3c Agriculture (O3). Uncancelled and affixed to legal-size cover with printed address to Commissioner of Agriculture in Washington D.C., "Statistical Returns" imprint, minor wrinkling, Very Fine, Scott value for a mailed cover is $900.00 (Image) E. 300-400

SOLD for $225.00
Will close during Public Auction
3770 c image6c Agriculture (O4). Well-centered, lightly cancelled by circle of wedges, used on large part of wrapper with half of "Department of Agriculture, Official Business" label intact and an 1874 printed agricultural report listing quantities of livestock in Westover Md., stamp slightly creased, an exhibit-worthy and extremely rare use of the 6c Agriculture stamp, this is not one of the four covers listed in the Campbell census of Agriculture Department covers, thus it becomes a fifth known usage, Scott value for a cover is $7,500.00 (Image) E. 1,500-2,000

SOLD for $1,800.00
Will close during Public Auction
3771   image10c Agriculture (O5). Bright color, tied by bold circular cork cancel on complete "Department of Agriculture, Public Document" imprint label affixed to large part of folded package wrapper, signed by Frederick Watts (Commissioner), addressed to Rutledge, Grainger Co., Tenn., minor stains

ONE OF THREE RECORDED USAGES OF THE 10-CENT AGRICULTURE DEPARTMENT STAMP, ALL OF WHICH ARE ON "PUBLIC DEPARTMENT" LABELS SIGNED BY FREDERICK WATTS, AND ONLY TWO OF WHICH ARE FULL LABELS.

This is No. 2 of only three 10c Agriculture usages listed in the Campbell census (Chronicle No. 194, May 2002). Campbell incorrectly reported the destination as Rutledge, Virginia, but Grainger County is, in fact, in Eastern Tennessee. The third 10c Agriculture usage listed by Campbell is a portion of the label (essentially a "piece" and offered as such in the Markovits sale). In all three cases the stamp paid the 10c "public document" rate for a single bound volume. (Image)

E. 3,000-4,000

SOLD for $5,250.00
Will close during Public Auction
