Paid 27 Jan. 10" circular datestamp on cover to Shanghai, China, 1865 French transit and boxed "P.D." handstamp, Paris and receiving backstamps, slightly reduced at left, stamp with single short perf at right, cover with trivial soiling at top, Very Fine, this letter left New York on the January 11 sailing of the Australasian which ran aground and finally sailed on Jan. 13 for Liverpool, although France had established a packet line from Suez to Hong Kong with an annex to Shanghai starting in October of 1862, sailing schedules do not match any dates on this cover and so this was likely carried by the British P & O Line even though it is franked to be sent via French mails (Image) E. 750-1,000

VERY FINE. AN ATTRACTIVE "CHINA AND JAPAN STEAM SERVICE" COVER AND RARE WITH THE JAPANESE "X" CHOP CANCEL.
