VERY FINE. THIS COVER WAS CARRIED ON THE SECOND PACKET SAILING FROM FROM FALMOUTH TO NEW YORK.
According to Horowicz-Lowe (p. 13): "On 15th November 1755, the British Post Office dispatched the first regular mail packet from Falmouth to New York. From this time there were two packets sailing monthly to and from New York, and this service continued right through to the Revolutionary period with few interruptions." The "NEW/YORK" handstamp is reputed to have been applied by the agent for the Falmouth packet. This is the earliest Falmouth-New York Packet cover we have located (Horowicz-Lowe valued this marking at £250 used in 1756 versus £35 after 1757). (Image)
