"Prisoner" at bottom left and censor's mark "Examined and found all right" at top, slightly reduced at top and missing top flap, repaired along edges, otherwise Fine, unusual usage, research by Galen Harrison has determined that the recipient was a former member of the Tennessee legislature with Unionist leanings who was arrested by Col. Churchwell and sent to the prison camp at Macon Ga. on charges of encouraging others to join the Union army -- this cover is illustrated in Harrison book (p. 27) -- with 1987 P.F. certificate (Image) E. 1,000-1,500

Commanding nr. Sorel Horse (?)" indicating censorship by Confederate officer, cover tear affects address and ms. marking, otherwise Very Fine, this is the only recorded Confederate censor's cover from Arkansas, Alf Johnson's Spy Company was the only reinforcement to reach Arkansas Post when the fort was under attack and were forced to surrender, they were released in May 1863 (Image) E. 2,000-3,000

Jul. 12, 1863" double-circle datestamp on cover to Shelbyville Tenn., endorsed at left "Prisoner's Letter, Approved Joel A. Fife Lt. Comm. Military Prison, Nashville Tenn, Per Graham O.S.", with original enclosures comprising two letters dated July 4, 5 and 10, 1863, from a Walter Ryall to his father, in the earliest he states "I arrived here yesterday evening", in the latest he states "I am still here. We leave I understand on next Tuesday", remarks "Penitentiary life is rather confining", and asks "Do the negros still stay contentedly on the farm?", slightly reduced at right, stamp and cover with minor faults flaws, otherwise Fine, this is the only recorded cover from this Nashville prison according to Harrison (illustrated in his book on p. 208) (Image) E. 750-1,000
