A FINE COVER WITH THE ONLY RECORDED STRIKE OF THE "PER FRANCES PALMER" NAME-OF-SHIP HANDSTAMP WITHOUT QUOTATION MARKS.
Gregory reports only this cover as an example of the "PER FRANCES PALMER" straightline without quotation marks around the name of ship. There are four other covers with a similar marking with quotation marks.

EXTREMELY FINE. REPORTED TO BE THE FINEST EXAMPLE OF THE EXCEEDINGLY RARE "STMR. KILAUEA" INTER-ISLAND STEAMSHIP DATESTAMP EXTANT.
According to Gregory, the S.S. Kilauea was "an 806-ton wooden hull screw steamer built by Tibbetts and Sorenson at Honolulu in 1878. She continued in the interisland trade until past 1900. Until 1885, she was operated by Capt. Hobron for runs between Honolulu and Kahului. She was transferred to Wilder's Steamship Company in 1885."
