VERY FINE. ONE OF TWO RECORDED COVERS BEARING THE 1864 2-CENT FIFTH-SETTING NUMERAL ISSUE ON WHITE WOVE PAPER.

2c Numeral stamps from the Fifth Setting on white wove paper are much scarcer in used condition than unused. By the date of this cover, September 12, 1864, the National Bank Note Co. 2c Kamehameha IV stamps (Scott 31) were circulating in Hawaii (issued June 1864 and known used as early as August 1864). This cover was part of the Henry J. Crocker collection, then passed to H. P. Atherton. It did not appear at auction until the 1996 Shreve sale of the Charles J. Pietsch III collection (lot 1176), where it was acquired by Twigg-Smith for $14,500 plus premium.

Ex Crocker, Atherton and Pietsch. Scott value for No. 20 on cover is $16,500, based on auction realization more than ten years ago. (Image)

THE ONLY REPORTED USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1865 5-CENT BLUISH BLACK ON GRAYISH WHITE PAPER. ONLY ONE OTHER COPY IS KNOWN TO US.

The unused copy of Scott 21b was sold in the Honolulu Advertiser sale for $10,500 hammer and is the basis of the Scott listing. At the time of the Honolulu Advertiser sale, the existence of this used copy was not known to us. The Scott Catalogue still describes the unused copy as "unique."

With 1998 Hawaiian Philatelic Society certificate (Image)

Jan. 10, 1866" double-circle datestamp on buff cover to Boston Mass., originating red "Honolulu U.S. Postage Paid Dec. 3" circular datestamp, endorsed "Per Steamer via Panama", small scuffs at bottom of cover from previous hinge removal, Hawaiian stamp has faint gum spots and tiny wrinkle at right

VERY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL MIXED-FRANKING COVER WITH THE HAWAIIAN 1865 5-CENT NUMERAL ISSUE AND UNITED STATES 5-CENT 1863 ISSUE.

SOLD for $1,500.00
Will close during Public Auction
4116° c image1865, 5c Blue on Blue (22). Plate 12-A, Type X, Position 5, close margins touching frameline in places, tied by bold 3-ring target with center punch, red "Honolulu U.S. Postage Paid Apr. 4" circular datestamp on cover to San Francisco, from the George S. Chase correspondence, used with United States 1863 5c Brown (76), uncancelled, which is unusual, but evidently the entire cover was delivered in San Francisco without receiving any arrival markings, this was probably carried from Honolulu to San Francisco on the Ajax (cleared Apr. 4, arrived Apr. 15, 1866), skillfully restored opening faults in flap and along top, not affecting stamps, Very Fine appearance, ex Adm. Harris, Burrus and Honolulu Advertiser (Image) E. 2,000-3,000

SOLD for $1,500.00
