Robert E. Lee. Bold signature "R. E. Lee Genl" at top right
of yellow cover addressed in his hand to Dr. Orlando Fairfax in Richmond
Virginia, the cover also bears horizontal pair of 5c Blue, De La Rue
(6) tied by "Richmond Va. Dec. 31, 1862" circular datestamp, expertly
repaired horizontal file fold at top VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE
EXAMPLE OF LEE'S SIGNATURE IN COMBINATION WITH CONFEDERATE GENERAL ISSUE
STAMPS. The original enclosure, not included, was a letter of
condolence for the death of Randolph Fairfax, who was killed at
Fredericksburgh. According to the Monroe census, there are fifteen Robert
E. Lee postally-used covers in private hands (that is, covers bearing Lee's
signature, which actually entered the Confederate postal system). Of these,
only four have 5c pairs (No. 6 or 7). |
