VERY FINE. THIS IS THE ONLY RECORDED USE OF THE 30-CENT 1869 PICTORIAL ISSUE FROM CUBA. A COLORFUL AND RARE FRANKING, PAYING THE 10-CENT RATE FROM CUBA TO THE UNITED STATES AND THE DOUBLE 15-CENT TREATY RATE TO FRANCE.
This cover was prepaid 40c in Havana, which included 10c for the rate from Cuba to the United States (up to one-half ounce) and 30c for the double rate to France (15c per quarter-ounce, in accordance with the 7.5 grams weight limit). On arrival in New York, it was bagged for the sailing of the North German Lloyd Hermann, which departed on Sep. 25, 1869, and unloaded its mail at Southampton on Oct. 6. The New York Sep. 25 credit datestamp (double 6c credit for American Packet mail) and Calais Oct. 7 transit datestamp correspond to these sailing dates.
Stanley B. Ashbrook included this cover in his Special Service (Photo 76, p. 164) and stated "...this is one of the extremely rare 'Combination Rate' covers. It is genuine in every respect...This cover is not only a combination of rates but a combination of 1869 stamps."
