1234 c imageThe Clippert Collection of Red River and Ouachita River Packetboat Markings. 443 folded letters or covers acquired by the Clipperts over a 40-year period with a concentrated effort during the past decade, most are still on the original lot cards marked with prices paid, accompanied by invoices and many with clipped catalogue descriptions, an A to Z representation of name-of-boat markings with some duplication (including scarce and rare markings), the earliest is a Feb. 1822 folded letter endorsed per Independence, naturally the majority of covers falls into the 1850-60 period with markings struck on 3c entires, a fair number with adhesives (mainly 3c 1851-57 Issues), some earlier stampless and some later, including Confederate usage (and a few potential Confederate), condition is generally far above average with most covers in clean condition and markings clearly struck, several are unusually choice

AN UNPRECEDENTED OPPORTUNITY TO ACQUIRE THE LARGEST AND MOST COMPREHENSIVE COLLECTION OF RED RIVER AND OUACHITA RIVER PACKETBOAT COVERS SINCE THE GREAT FISHER SIMMONS COLLECTION WAS DISPERSED MORE THAN 25 YEARS AGO.

The Red River and its tributary, the Ouachita, facilitated steamboat navigation from as early as 1814. Although the fluctuating water levels caused some irregularity in routes and service, the Red and Ouachita Rivers were extremely active during the decade preceding the Civil War. The Clippert collection, comprising 443 covers with name-of-boat markings, provides the raw material for an important mounted collection or exhibit of mail carried by steamboats along this vital waterway.
