A VERY FINE AND ATTRACTIVE COVER WITH THE "LS" PHILADELPHIA CARRIER STAMP.

This May 12 postmark on a clearly-dated 1849 letter is an appropriate date of use of the "LS" stamp. The Philadelphia carrier service was reorganized in February 1849, and stamps were issued at that time. Lyons reports 12-15 covers with 7LB4. (Image)

AN EXTREMELY FINE EXAMPLE OF THIS EXCEEDINGLY RARE CARRIER STAMP. NO MORE THAN A DOZEN EXAMPLES OF 7LB14 ARE KNOWN TO US.

The Type C31 stamps were ordinarily left uncancelled, this probably was removed from a cover. The pencil lines at bottom and right are characteristic layout lines.
