VERY FINE APPEARANCE. PROBABLY FEWER THAN A HALF-DOZEN COVERS EXIST WITH THE SWARTS "FOR THE MAILS" STAMP IN RED.
The Red "For the Mails" stamps were issued by Swarts in 1851 when the 1c rate was introduced. The Red stamps are far rarer than the Blue stamps of the same design, which followed sometime later. Caspary had a small piece and a repaired example on cover, while Middendorf had none at all. We have offered five different covers in the past 13 years.
Scott Retail of $1,000.00 for a single tied on cover ignores the fact that this cover realized $5,500 hammer in our Sale 773. (Image)
ONE OF TWO RECORDED EXAMPLES OF SWARTS' BLACK "FOR THE MAILS" STAMP. ONE OF THE RAREST OF ALL LOCAL POST STAMPS.
Not to be confused with the more common red and blue "For the Mails" stamps issued by Swarts' City Dispatch Post, the Black Swarts is one of the greatest rarities of local posts. Only one other example is recorded -- a stamp tied on folded letter with a large tear across the address panel, which was sold in the Caspary auction, but has not been seen since. The Scott listing for 136L17 is based on this example.
