566 og image1c Blue, Ty. Ia (19). Original gum, unusually wide margins for this issue with intact perfs and part of selvage at bottom, clearly showing the full design at bottom (the defining characteristic of the type), deep rich color and proof-like impression

VERY FINE AND CHOICE. WITHOUT QUESTION THIS IS ONE OF THE FINEST ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLES OF THE ONE-CENT PERFORATED TYPE IA STAMP IN EXISTENCE.

Type Ia was produced by only 18 of the 20 bottom-row positions on Plate 4. Although Plate 4 was designed with sufficient space to accommodate perforations, the height of the top row and bottom row positions resulted in the perforations often cutting into the design at either top or bottom. For this reason, stamps from the bottom row of Plate 4 with perforations clear of the design are especially desirable, since the characteristics of the type is complete (Type Ia) or nearly complete (Type Ic) at bottom. The stamp offered here, with original gum and the design complete all around, is one of the finest examples with original gum we have ever offered.

With 1989 P.F. certificate (Image)

567 image1c Blue, Ty. Ia (19). Position 94R4, choice centering for this difficult issue with wide margin at top and intact perforations at bottom, showing the full type characteristics, bright color, face-free strike of circular datestamp

EXTREMELY FINE. A MAGNIFICENT SOUND USED EXAMPLE OF THE RARE 1857 ONE-CENT TYPE Ia PERFORATED STAMP.

Type Ia was produced by only 18 of the 20 bottom-row positions on Plate 4. Although Plate 4 was designed with sufficient space to accommodate perforations, the height of the top row and bottom row positions resulted in the perforations often cutting into the design at either top or bottom. For this reason, stamps from the bottom row of Plate 4 with the lower part of the design intact or nearly intact are especially desirable. The example offered here is highly desirable, owing to its intact perforations at bottom that preserve the complete design and the neatly-applied cancel that does not obscure the type characteristics.

EXTREMELY FINE. A RARE UNUSED EXAMPLE OF THE DRAMATIC PLATE CRACK FROM PLATE 2. PERFORATED STAMPS FROM PLATE 2 ARE VERY SCARCE, ESPECIALLY THOSE SHOWING THE PLATE CRACK. THIS UNUSED EXAMPLE IS A GREAT RARITY.

The plate crack is seen in varying degrees on Positions 2, 12, 13 and 23. It is most easily seen in the position offered here -- Position 23. As an indication of rarity, December 1995 was the last time we offered an unused example, which was off-center.
